Default DADman .dms vs .dmprof file question

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I don’t see a spot for DADman/MTRX specific questions. Please point me to it if I’m missing something.

I’m a bit fuzzy on the two types of data being saved from the DADman software. In the File menu you have an “Open” and “Save” command which allow you to open or save .dms files, but then there’s also a “Open Profile” and “Save Profile” commands which open or save .dmprof files.

So, does a .dms file *not* include the profile information in it? What exactly is saved in each type of file and does one override the other? I’ve snooped around a bit but have yet to find this explicitly spelled out.

Would love a clear explanation.

thanks!

The Monitor Profile file is everything that is programmed for monitoring. Speakers, Alt speakers, Cues, etc.

You can have several of these depending on different types of monitor/cue setups.

The other one is all of the IO labeling and setup.

Greetings,

The .dmprof file is specific to the Monitor Profile alone - which contains up to 16 monitors composed of sources, outputs, folddowns and meters.

The .dms file contains everything else, including the AD, DA, patch and configuration settings. You can configure DADman to automatically load your last .dms and .dmprof files on launch under the preferences. Hope this helps.

best,

Jeff

Thanks for that! I guess what I don't understand is why isn't this all just saved in a single file? Why are there 2 files that need to be saved to save your monitor and I/O setup?

Those of us with constantly changing routing per project (film scoring music with more than one system, for instance) have the same monitoring but vastly different routing per project. Or even per cue.

Going further back with DAD, location recording would have similar needs per venue.

This can work the other way too. Different monitoring during tracking vs mixing.

OK, thanks all! I'm in a use case for the S6 where I come in to a client's to work on music (where others have been working on post) and I just want to load up my monitor/MTRX settings and go - seems funny to me to have to load two files into the same app, but I guess I can see where it could be useful for these to be separated.

Appreciate the prompt info folks - very helpful!

Apologies for thread drift here - why does loading a session in PT seem to change the DADman configuration settings? I keep having to reload my .dms file after loading a Pro Tools session (even saved with the correct DADman configs) in order to get things like my I/O / talkback settings correct? I'm sure this must be in prefs somewhere on the S6 but I can't find it.

thanks!!

Can you be more specific or post a screen shot or video?

PT does not control the loading or non-loading of DAD files.

If your IO setup in PT changes per session, that could account for what you might be experiencing as DADMan changes.

Shots attached of just the A/D card: 1st is desired setup. Save Pro Tools session, re-open same session and you get the second A/D setup; note A/D #7 and A/D #10. What the heck is going on here?

Before Pro Tools session open:

After session open:

Looks like you are also using PRE Control via IAC, yes?
