Default Is more REALLY less? :-)

Hi,

I've been listening to "I'm Alive" from Celine Dion and her voice appears to be swimming in reverb and delay, something I've always tried to avoid but I think in this instance it sounds really good.

If anyone has this track nearby, could they give me a few hints on how to achieve this effect without going too far and so that I can hear my vocalist clearly?

I am limited to using RVerb from Waves, but it is the best plugin reverb in my opinion.

Thanks

ren/verb will do fine for this..

trust yourself , give the mix a few days to settle
and listen again. (if you can) you'll feel different about the way it sounds after a day or two.

The SPX 900 used to have a really cool symphonic patch. Much cleaner than the 90, if you can find one.

Humberto is really good at what he does, so it will be hard to copy his sound with just Ren Verb (having Celine helps, too). He usually uses an AMS RMX 16 and the 480L for important stuff and probably an H-3000 for the delays. Believe it or not, the SPX 90 symphonic preset gets used, too. Pretty much everything Hum uses is what he considers to be the best--there are no compromises. I've gotten to look over his shoulder a few times, and it's worth the ride.

May not apply but,
The Ren will do you fine. I found that Pre-delay is the big key to "Mucho" reverb.

You may only have Ren reverb, but I suppose you also have Pro Tools delay plug ins.

If you take two aux tracks panned not to wide with a long mono delay plug and a bus input each, and by fine tuning the tempo of these delays you can do some great delay tricks.

The delicate part is using the sends to do cross feedback, and sending the delay outputs into the reverb for blending.

Also you may have to limit the highs on the delays to avoid having slap effects on hard consonants

Personnally I avoid using to much early reflection on the Ren reverb since I find it makes the reverb a bit hard

Miles,

These are very generalized points, sort of out of my methodology...
Try setting your Pre-delay at around 80 ms as a starting point. I usually set the reverb up as an aux input and find that a mono lead vocal send enables the reverb to stand out a bit more in the mix. Also I sometimes set up (at least) 2 aux input delays. Use the Pro Tools delay plug ins. I set to taste, but say, one to 1/4 notes and one to 3/16th and blend in slightly to the track. I sometime use no delay or only one in the verse section (say 1/4 notes), then automate both delays in the chorus ... again very generalised. Panning is obviously also critical.

Good luck
