None unless you are mixing low frequency effects for a film. A pair ranks behind that for extending monitors having a limited lf response. Single subs don't translate very well. They are fine for fun listening but not mixing where it's about accuracy.

Depending on the room and its treatment, obviously.

Smaller the room better the sub translates. Especially if you are not alone and therefore all ears are not in the perfect listening spot. Sub works wonderfully in this scenario.

The problem is that low frequencies are still directional in spite of the '50s era marketing nonsense claiming that they are not. If you ever get a chance to compare calibrated full-range speakers to the same only crossed to a single sub in a small room, the difference is blatantly obvious. Another audiophile myth is that speakers can be too big for a room. Lopping off the low end sounds better in a small untreated room but it is not accurate monitoring.

Oh sure, I have. And you're right when you sit on the triangle position two "perfect" speakers win 2.1 system any day.

Just that the difference isn't that big compared to mixing with another guy and having to swap positions every now and then because the bottom end sounds a bit different from my and his seat.

I wasn't referring to how directional the low end is. I was talking about "room modes"
