Default For Powerbook G4 667 + 002 : upgrade to Panther?

I'm not able to buy a new computer just yet.

I'm wondering if I should move from 10.2.8 to 10.3.X.

I've read that people tend to say Panther runs faster - in general. Does anyone have this experience with slower machines like mine? (TiBook DVI 667 - OSX 10.2.8)

I'm functional, but when I get labor intensive, like using Rewire while tracking, I can max out the CPU meter pretty easily. The question is: Will I run at all faster if I upgrade to Panther and LE 6.3? Or is it possible it might actually be slower?!

Thanks.

I've got a G4 400MHz + 001 and find the upgrade to Panther from Jaguar to be an improvement in many ways. Tests say that it's up to 15% faster. I can't verify this, but I wouldn't hesistate to upgrade.

Good luck!

I second that - Upgrading to Panther on my PowerBook was a huge performance increase. Everything feels so much more responsive.

I have yet to upgrade my main recording computer - G4 - dual 1.25ghz but I am hoping the performance increase will be the same.

Cheers

LnL,

I have the same Sawtooth 400MHz w/Digi 001. I'm still on OS 9.2.2 and LE 5.1; try not to laugh (I have graphics software I've been stalling about upgrading). I know the latest PT LE for Panther is not officially supported for the Digi 001, but it looks as if no problems have been detected...yet (I just wonder how long Digidesign will support PT LE Panther upgrades for the 001.

Did you upgrade your native hard drive, because mine is only 10GB and I'd like to install the new iLife as well as Panther (iLife w/GarageBand and iDVD looks like a hard drive hog and I HAVE to install iDVD to get GB...or so it seems)? If you did upgrade your native hard drive, was it a pain? I installed my 2nd internal 30GB Seagate drive long ago with no problem. Also, how much RAM do you have (I've got 704MB)?

Someone (whose suppose to be a techie) also told me they had a heck of a time getting OS X to install on their older OS 9 computer. And further, told me they think the OS your system came with is what you should stay with or you'll have problems. They wouldn't elaborate...so I don't know WHAT the heck they meant.

I don't have the $ to buy a new computer at the moment, but I don't know whether to save for a new one or throw money at the old one. I'm borrowing another member of my family's single G4 1GHz w/1.5GB RAM to play with all the iLife stuff, but I can't load it up with my PT stuff and completely take it over. I'm crowding their space a bit as it.

Any thoughts would be helpful. I've looked at a processor upgrade too, but then I go back to the new computer down the road for all that hassle and money (my old external CD burner doesn't have OS X drivers and on and on with compatibility issues, etc.). And yet, a G5 (which cost almost as much as a 2xG4 won't work with my 001...so that's big bucks even as a trade-in to the 002r.

On well, I know I'm not alone...at least...I don't think I am.
