Default Confusing Language at the Avid Site

OK LOOK!

Pro Tools LE supports the use of any single Pro Tools LE audio interface
Simultaneous use of multiple Pro Tools LE hardware devices is not supported

Why doesn't Pro Tools LE 7.0 recognize my DIGI 001?????????

The stuff below specifically refers to 7.4, not 7.0.

Pro Tools LE Audio Interface Required
Pro Tools LE 7.4 supports the following Digidesign audio devices:
003
003 Rack+
003 Rack
Digi 002
Digi 002 Rack
Mbox 2 Pro
Mbox 2
Mbox 2 Mini
Mbox 2 Micro
Mbox
Pro Tools LE 7.4 software will not launch without one of the above Digidesign Pro Tools LE hardware interfaces connected. Please note:
Pro Tools LE supports the use of any single Pro Tools LE audio interface
Simultaneous use of multiple Pro Tools LE hardware devices is not supported
Maximum Sample Rate:
003, 003 Rack, Digi 002, Digi 002 Rack, Mbox 2 Pro - 96 kHz
Mbox 2, Mbox 2 Mini, Mbox 2 Micro, Mbox - 48 kHz

Support was dropped for the 001 a long time ago.

6.4 was the last version if I remember correctly.

You are just learning of this now?

Here is the link

This was basically triggered by Apple dropping PCI slots (in about 2002), as far as I can tell...

Also... none of that has anything to do with an 001 or 7.0...?

Of course, if you just did a search for "001" (which I just did) on the main digi site, you would have found this as the first result:

Blam!

There it is on the Digi 001 system requirements page... but with quotes like this...

"Pro Tools LE supports the use of any single supported Pro Tools LE audio interface."

... I thought there'd be no problem.

Yeah, I've been doing Pro Tools 5.1 for years on OS 9.2 on a Blue and White G3. Super stable system! It never made a lick of difference in my needs, so I didn't care to get involved with the trendiness which amounts to hardly any bit of audio quality difference, but a whole lot more money.

Then I started using Reason and Ableton and wanted to rewire it in to Pro Tools. Thats why I started updating, just recently. Got 6.4, everything was fine. But then I started getting gigs mixing music and found that I had no backwards compatibility, so I got my friend's 7.0 disc... and the rest you know.

So it would be wise for me to upgrade my hard ware. I really do not want to give up my inputs and outputs, so it looks like the Mbox 2 Pro is the best bang for the buck. Any other recommendations?

Actually if you want to have the same number of inputs/outputs as your Digi001, you are probably better off with the Digi003R. There is also the Digi003 with the control surface and the Digi003R+ with 8 mic pres. The Mbox2Pro only give you 4 analog inputs (two mic pres/2 line ins) plus two digital SP/DIF inputs. Are you planning to use these on your Blue&White G3? Most likely you new interface will come with Protools 8 which will require at least Leopard (OSX 10.5.x) or Protools 8.0.3 which will require Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.x) and an Intel based Mac. You kind of need to upgrade your whole system and OS, and not just the interface and software. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The good news is that you are doing your research first before buying anything. It will save you a lot of headache. Better set a higher budget.
