HD Omni only 8 outs at a time!?!
Is there a particular reason why the HD Omni is limited to only 8 out at one time. I had a 003 rack and was able to use all 8 analog outs and the spdif out at the same time. You would think something like this would be child's play for an HD interface. Is this something that can be "fixed" by Avid in the future?

Re: HD Omni only 8 outs at a time!?!
This is clearly stated in the specs and description of the unit.
I don't know if it will ever be changed, or if it could be. If they made it where you have more inputs, then no one would buy the HD IO 8x8, which is basically what that would become if they did it. Depending on what you're doing, you may be able to creatively jerry rig the separate headphone output for use somehow using a Y-adapter, which could then free up the spidf. |

Get rid of the DB-25 crap. Spec it with 4 mic pres + 8 analog line I/O and last but not least put in 2 individual headphone outs!! |

I'm summing through a Dangerous Dbox which goes in 8 channels through a DB25 connection. Then you go out of the Omni Spdif back into the Dbox to be able to monitor the differences in the mix. I wouldn't need more inputs just more outputs. Gonna have to just settle with only 6 channels of summing I guess. |

I agree. I have never understood why the limited the omni to 8 I/O. I may have jumped to HD|Native by now if not for that limitation.

Hope Avid will make an device with Omni's specs and Mbox Pro's features! I also hope they will let me hardware exchange Omni to that. |

Re: HD Omni only 8 outs at a time!?!
Whittybeats,
There's a couple of things to point out about using the Omni with the Dbox. For one thing, you don't need to use the Dbox D/A conversion to hear your mix. As good as it is, the Omni's is probably better. You could simply go from 2 of your Omni outs into the ANALOG input of the Dbox, and switch back and forth from the SUM input (when tracking) and the ANALOG input (when mixing), instead of switching from the SUM to the DAW input like you would if you were using the Dbox D/A converter. Secondly, to elaborate on my jerry-rigging idea I mentioned, here's a method that may work and still get you 8 channels of summing, by using the headphone cue output, which shows up as 9-10 in Protools: You would set the output of your stereo mixdown track (and master fader, if needed) to output 9-10. Then, you would use one of these out of the headphone out, making sure the "cue" button is selected: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...-1-4-y-adapter You would connect the mono ends to 2 of these: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...xlr-male-cable And those would go in the ANALOG input of the Dbox. Then you switch back and forth between that and the SUM input, as mentioned. In order to do this, you would probably turn the headphone volume of the Omni all the way up, which would make it line level. Then you would use the Dbox for monitoring as normal, and you would be able to use the 2 headphone jacks on the Dbox as normal. If you decide this is too complex (or looks bizarre), then you could stick with the 6 channels of summing, and leave 2 analog outputs of the Omni to go to the Analog in of the Dbox, as mentioned in the other example. The only thing is that both of these methods make it very difficult, and maybe impossible, to use a CD Player with Digital out to go into the Omni's Digital ins using the Omni's mixer (assuming you wanted to have that go through the Omni's converters as well). I hope this makes some sense. |

Re: HD Omni only 8 outs at a time!?!
To be fair technically the Omni does 10 outs at a time.
Monitor 1/2 & DB25 1 through 8 . as long as you mirror the monitor outputs. I found this useful for cue sends which is what its for I believe. With the addition of the omni with the HD16x16 this gives me 24ins 20 analog plus 4 more digital ins and 26 analog outs . Perfect for me . 20 channel strips and a bank of 4 utility pre,s . All I will ever need. I thought the monitor section what be better though that why I bought it. It doesn't suck I guess I was just expecting more. 10 analog out 1/2 for monitoring and 1/8 on DB25 |

Re: HD Omni only 8 outs at a time!?!
Mirroring is not what he's trying to do. He's trying to get 10 discrete outs, and the only way to do that is to somehow use the headphone cue out.

Headphone outs just mirror the monitor outs . BUT If you were not using the OMNI for monitoring then you would have the 8 outs plus the 2 from the headphones. Going by the instructions thats as close as it gets I think. |
