i913900k Users
Hi guys,
I just upgraded my system to i913900k 64Gb DDR5 5600. I had problems when I first set it up because I was using my old Windows installation, but a suggestion from ejinbc motivated me to do a fresh install of everything. I'd overclocked to 57GHz, but I stepped down to 56GHz all-core, and the system is running well. Apart from standard optimizations that have always been a part of my setup, I'd like to find out how other i913900 users are tweaking their systems for optimum results. 1. How far have you overclocked your systems? 2. What are your settings in regard to hyperthreading? 3. Are you using processor affinity switching or is it unnecessary? What are your settings if you are? 4. Any other useful tweaks? Thanks in advance, guys.

Assume you meant 5.7 and 5.6MHz? Congrats on the new build, and I would always load OS fresh for anything that involves a new CPU or motherboard.

Re: i913900k Users
I'm using a 13900KF here which is just running at whatever the default motherboard settings are.
Curious to know what you are using to cool your CPU? On heavier tasks, mine definitely seems to be hitting some thermal throttling at 102c. Lots of power, but she runs hot!

Sorry, I did mean 5.7 and 5.6GHz. I'd had a bit too much to drink when I posted that You are right about fresh OSs for new hardware. I'd done what I did several times in the past without issues, but most of my weird problems disappeared when I did a fresh install of everything. Never too late for an old dog to learn new tricks

At 5.6 all-core, the highest temps I've seen for heavy loads are 80c. Maybe that has something to do with the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut that I use. I'm usually around 40-60. Did I win the lottery this time? At 5.7GHz the system didn't throttle, but I saw some instability. V-core is currently 1.35v.

1. I run all cores at a constant 5.1GHz, with no up/down throttling. As I recall, my i9 can run at 5.3 max boost, but I am playing it safe/conservative. It's steady, stable, and crazy powerful. 2. I leave hyperthreading on. 3. Lately, I haven't seen any Pro Tools CPU spiking, so I haven't been adjusting affinity. Perhaps the latest Win 11 updates are handling things better? Not sure... (The last time I did see spikes was quite awhile ago. I just un-checked cores 0 & 1, and that fixed the spikes right away.) 4. Go through Windows Settings and basically turn everything off. Do a Google search and/or YouTube search for "gaming" optimizations for ideas. Kill unnecessary startup items and kill unnecessary Windows Services. Uninstall bloatware. Even a clean Windows install has some bloatware. Run a spyware scan. CCleaner reg clean and regular cleaning too. But basically if you ALWAYS keep Windows/all plugs/audio interface drivers FULLY up-to-date, you'll be golden. Your CPU has a ton of "headroom", so even doing nothing more than the standard AVID optimizations will give you a great Pro Tools rig. Oh yeah, take boot drive images. I'm using Macrium Reflect free version. Congrats on the build!

Nice! I'm just running an air cooler here... and not a particularly flash one at that. How loud is that water loop? I've been contemplating putting a custom loop in mine, but a large part of me also can't be bothered dealing with water + computer components.

I wouldn't go for a custom loop myself but I believe there are quieter AIO offerings out there from Corsair and others. Just more expensive.

I feel the same way you do about processor affinity. I used to have Process Lasso do that for me automatically, but I've turned it off now. My reasoning is that with Intel's new CPU architecture, the e-cores should be able to take care of all the background stuff and allow the p-cores to do their thing. In all my past builds hyper-threading has been my friend.

So far it's running smoothly, and I have still not seen temps above 80c. Between 40 and 60c on average when running a moderately heavy PT session (buffer 128). Maybe you should look at your cooling and thermal paste. I use Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut.
