maybe try MacRumors forums, you might get an answer there faster.

Re: Who else is still using a Mac Pro 5,1 or older computer?
I'm using a earyl 2009 /32gb/ 4.1 mac pro flashed to 5.1 with pro tools 2022.5 on high sierra with no problems. I use an apogee i/o mk1 as a soundcard.
I've decided to upgrade a little bit and went with a rx560 gpu and installed mojave. I constantly get the 6101 errors now at low buffers like 128. No matter what pro tools version I use. Has anyone run into the same problem and have a solution for this ? avid support told me the 2009/2010 models are not supported anymore. But I see a lot of pro tools users still use them. Who is using a 2009 4.1 flashed to 5.1 on mojave ? |

Hi,
try to disable "Enable GPU" in Pro Tools preferences. Helped me and others. Best Maik

Re: Who else is still using a Mac Pro 5,1 or older computer?
I'd say get familiar with Opencore. The team who are doing this are geniuses.
I have just updated 2 computers over the past 2 days fairly painlessly to Monterey. The machines were a 2012 MacBook Pro (2.7G quad core Retina) machine that I spent heaps on and has been a workhorse, and also an old Mac mini server (5,3 dual processor Intel rig). I followed the instructions of this no-faff chap on you-tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4tsltwR2g8, a really simple guide to actually getting open core to bind with your machine. I managed to get Monterey to do an "over the top system install", so as to preserve documents and settings etc. Yes I know about the benefits of a clean install and indeed you can do that, but these machines just work so I am a happy camper. Next off the block will be my Mac Pro 5,1 which runs on Mojave and has an un-flashed RX580. This machine has 3.3 GHz upgraded processors bought via eBay and all that jazz, it's a frankenstein machine, but it's cut feature films for me rock solidly for 12 years and I see no reason why it will stop. An un-flashed GPU means a few more hoops to jump thru, but it simply means a couple of terminal commands to bless your little USB installer stick to be the one that is booted from as you will not be able to see it on the bootpicker page as it will be black. Or you can get someone to flash your card or buy one flashed so you can see a boot screen natively. I have a brand new rig with a Max Studio Ultra and all the new stuff, but the Mac Pro just keeps going, and it's a beast. Also, it provides me with one thing that AVID just cannot provide for the new M1-M2 systems..... rock solid performance on an AVID NEXIS based storage system. My colleagues who have all bought the new machines cannot use them on NEXIS, and they gather dust after a year of ownership. So my Mac Studio Ultra is my home rig, the Mac Pro ( which will go to Monterey) will be the NEXIS rig, and all my machines will be on a pretty current OS thanks to Opencore genius. Try it out. You may be surprised. I was scared of the process, but now after a couple of conversions under my belt, I am like, just do it. Your old Mac Pro is a great machine. Don't waste it. Thanks for the correction. But do you really need to see it?

My live rig is at MP 4,1 but that holds HD3 cards and is therefore topped at (unsupported) Mavericks / PT10

Re: Who else is still using a Mac Pro 5,1 or older computer?
I've been using a 5,1 cheesgrater for many years. I just ordered a refurbished Max Studio, 64 GB RAM and 4 TB drive to begin the switch.
Hopefully I'll like it. I plan to setup an Apple Silicon only PT system so may take some time to fill it out. C
