Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
2022.12 in Intel or Rosetta mode is pretty good. Very few complaints on this forum - it was mostly bug fixes.
2022.12 as AS beta was ok but missing quite a few functions. I will agree that 2023.3 does seem to be a bit of a mess. Dominic

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
Judging from the previous PPC-to-Intel transition, we get great stability once Apple drops Intel support altogether and the next PT release only runs on ARM.

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
i'm really happy with 2023.3 on M1.
it finally feels as fast as PT 10 did on 10.6.8, which I consider the peak of timeline editing responsiveness. |

So mark my words and wait for the first Intel-free ARM-only release.

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
Personally I'm loving this most recent release. Fast and stable for me on two machines.
From my experience system instability is most likely due to buggy plug-ins rather than some sort of problem with the code of ProTools. Perhaps if you supplied some information about your system and what you're trying to do when it fails we might actually be able to help you

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
Yes, PPC-problematic plugins were also not loading on Intel-only PT. Same thing we can expect once there is no more Rosetta option and everything is ARM-only.

So you're saying that there won't be Pro Tools stability until 2027 or so? Apple will not drop Intel support for many more years. They are still selling the Mac Pro (Intel only) and would support that for at least three years after its demise.

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
No. I am expecting the level of stability rising more or less dramatically once PT is stripped off Intel-code (mac).

Re: OMG !! Can we just have an update that brings stability
2023.3 (MacStudio Ultra w/ OS Monterey) is very stable here. I can't import AAC audio from video files but that's about the only drawback.
Apps seem to be the least stable when users' configurations vary the most. It forces developers to accommodate a lot of different hardware/software and that can get sketchy; tough to find and remove bugs. If we all had the same machines, running in the same way, this wouldn't be an issue. We don't, we never will, and so bugs will just be part of the game. But along these lines, it's an even more complex time now with Intel and ARM-based Macs both prominent in the wild. As we phase out Intel processors, PT can begin to hone in on Silicon, writing more specifically for it. I believe that was the point being made earlier, and it should prove true. We should start to see this in the Silicon version of PT, once Rosetta is out of the way. This bell curve of issues -- growing pains -- should wane. |
