Default New control surface

Hi folks, hoping to get some advice on a new control surface - my old Motor Mix has finally carked it, I bought it second hand in 2004 and it's been a very reliable unit.

I need a reliable control surface to replace it, and the Avid S1 is out of my price range.

Looking at Icon Pro Audio. I realise I'm limited with the HUI protocol, that doesn't really bother me. I need 8 faders, rotary encoders, transport controls, an LCD/LED display with track/parameter names.

At present, I have the Motor Mix connected to a 002Rack via the 002R's MIDI ports.

The Icon Platform M+ connects to the PC via USB, not to the 002R via its MIDI ports.

Am I correct that, with the Icon unit connected to the PC via USB, I simply go into Setup/Peripherals/MIDI Controllers, select the "Type" as HUI, and the Icon unit can be selected in the "Receive From" and "Send To" fields?

Just checking this out before I commit to buying.

Thanks ppl.

A used Artist Mix (the predecessor to the S1) goes for a little under $500 used. That gives you 90% of the features of the S1 with deep integration in Pro Tools. Works with the latest Eucon.

That ICON Pro platform is terrible. Terrible faders, terrible knobs, etc. (I have one from when they came out.) But yes, the install is the USB puts virtual MIDI ports and you assign it in Peripherals.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm in Australia, one Australian dollar is currently buying about $0.63 USD at present.

I'd heard that Icon Pro Audio controllers weren't great initially, but firmware updates had solved the problems.

Anyone know if that's true?

edit - I'm on Pro Tools Studio 2022.3

It looks like it is set up like any other HUI control surface in Pro Tools, so yes, what you said is correct. Here is a setup guide from the Icon site showing what you need to do for Pro Tools.

Thanks Will. I'm considering a second hand Artist Mix for sale here in Australia, does anyone know if the Artist Mix has transport control buttons onboard?

It doesn't. But you can run it with the free Avid Control app on any tablet (or phone) and have all that (plus lot more soft keys, layout recall for the faders, etc.) Control has transport functions.
