Xpand Freezing PT

Dot, your system specs seems fine to me anyway but if you have one out of date plug-in it will throw your whole system. Xpand!2 doesn't freeze for me but if I'm auditioning whilst playing back Pro Tools does stop playback.

I don't generally have problems with my setup other than the odd XPAND2 crashing the system. It seems to be related to changing patches while either I'm in playback mode or if I'm simply just playing on the keyboard and auditioning sounds. It takes a while for it to happen so I can't say it's one patch or another. It just seems to be related to a patch change.

I can live with it because "knock on wood" I've not lost any of my work. I can save and restart and plus I really like XPAND2 a lot.

I mentioned this to DOT just in case DOT was also doing the same thing. Perhaps we can pinpoint the cause if we're using similar workflows.

DOT, I noticed you have a network printed installed. Do you have any background programs running that talk to the printer? I did and that caused me a lot of problems in the past so I removed it.
Also, you've got a wireless card. I've read posts where wireless can cause problems. Too bad windows 7 makes it so hard to manage hardware.


To reproduce the problem on my system I do one of the following

1)
- have an XPAND2 instance open with a patch selected.
- select the track so that you can play XPAND2 from the midi controller
- hit play on the transport ( or in my case - Command 8)
- advance through the patches each for about a second or two.
- at some random point in time, no more sound from the system
- system becomes unstable so quickly save and exit or just exit.

2)
- have an XPAND2 instance open with a patch selected.
- select the track so that you can play XPAND2 from the midi controller
- play something on the midi controller - don't hit play
- advance through the patches each for about a second or two
or use auto patch advance feature in XPAND2
- at some random point in time, no more sound from the system
- system becomes unstable so quickly save and exit or just exit.

Seems to be stable until I start to change patches.

Here's my system - Note - I have RAID installed on this box but always disabled when using PT9.01. I have also resisted 9.02 due to stories about problems with grid lines disappearing. "G" drive 10K RPM VelociRaptor is audio/music drive.

Alain, I can not reproduce this issue. It is more than likely that this issue is pointing more towards your system. Maybe not in hardware respects, cause your rig is the same if not better than mine and current. Ummm... can you post a sandra report of your plug-ins please?

just ran 3 hour session using xpand2, was changing patches, sequencing and doung pretty much all... and no issue at all. It worked perfectly fine today I'm really not sure what could be the reason for "crash" last week it was happening too often, but now i can't complain at all (at least today)

DOT - same here tonight. No crashing and I really tried to push the system to the limit too. At one point had RTAS usage up to 45% with a dozen VIs.

I managed to get the tech support utility to cough up the version numbers for the plug-ins - not easy to do in PT9. I couldn't find a copy of "trasher" to download - by some accounts it seems to be able to report version numbers.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for as it's really hard to find out what the latest version should be for the plugins from some manufactures. Some appear to report back incorrectly - ie. Addictive Drums - I know it's V1.5.2.
Line 6 - who knows?

Alain, you know you are going to have to spend the time checking whether those plug-ins are up to date. From the plug-ins that I use they seem to be fine but I don't have all that is on that list.

Currently, I think this is the only thread I know of that contains this issue. Two, maybe three users out of thousands have a problem. It is more than likely it is a user problem based on their system in some form and you'll need to troubleshoot.
