Real simple? 24 bit is higher resolution, therefore better sound quality than 16 bit. Recording, editing and processing should be done at 24 bit. However CD wave files are 16 bit, so you have to then bounce your 24 bit files down to 16 in order to play them on a CD player.

When you get a better feel for all this, do a search on "dither", which is a process you should include when you bounce from 24 to 16 bit files.

check this link

Do a Google on "digital audio basics" and/or "bit depth". You'll find tons more.

If you're aquainted with analog tape based recording, bit depth is kind of like tape width, the wider the tape, the beter the fidelity. Sample rate is kind of like tape speed, the faster the speed the better the fidelity.

That's a cool analogy.

And to further the analogy - the greater the bit depth and the higher the sample rate - the more media you consume while recording.

"If you're aquainted with analog tape based recording, bit depth is kind of like tape width, the wider the tape, the beter the fidelity. Sample rate is kind of like tape speed, the faster the speed the better the fidelity."
