Default Need your opinion

Hi, I am new to the pro tool arena. So as a starter I am getting used gear to keep from spending alot of money for learning. The list is:

Pro Tools LE (I dont know the version)
Digi 001
Mac G4 Dual 500Mhz 1.0GB Ram, 250GB HD 7200

Is the Dual 500Mhz G4 a good box for this setup?

HI,

the highest version of PT LE that will run with a 001 is 6.4cs9.

Beware, some of the older Mac can´t adress more than a 120GB ATA harddisk.
Besides that the setup will work. Nothing too extreme plug-ins wise
but it will work ok.

Unless you run that 250GB drive from the Firewire or a PCI card the dual 500 G4 won't be able to see more than 136GB.

The first G4 to have large drive compatibility is the later model Quicksilver.

That dual 500 will do well with OS 9/LE 5.1 (it won't use both CPUs though), and will be so-so with OS 10.3/LE 6.4.

Thanks for your reply's. I found out the specifics:

Pro Tools LE v6.1
Jaguar 10.2.6

Now is the G4 Dual 500Mhz rig good enough for this setup?

Never used Jaguar. It was still a beta OS IMHO. I went straight from OS 9 to Panther.

HI,

AVOID JAGUAR!!!

Panther is about 40% (in I/O operations) faster than Jaguar.
Go 10.3.8 (qualified with 001 etc.) or 10.3.9 with no higher version of Quicktime than 6.5.2, not qualified but worked absolutely stable for me and a lot of others.
