It seems like adding this in a future feature update would be a great idea.

Yes, you're right. But AFAIK, PT can't do either atm.

I'm wondering wether MIDI FX need to be coded through the plugin architecture or wether that is implemented directly in the software itself.

Also, the MIDI being sent out from plugins to other plugins is (again AFAIK) not possible in RTAS. Every developer that releases those type of plugins that I've come across have all said it's not possible in PT.

Toontrack's EZplayer Pro and EZkeys can send MIDI Out to drive other plugins, as RTAS plugins.
Or do I misunderstand?

I can't really say I'm familiar with Toontrack stuff, but upon have a quick look at the site, it appears that the MIDI stuff is implemented in their own instrument. I didn't see anything pertaining to outputting MIDI data to another instrument.

Can it actually do that?

So I'm bumping this older thread in light of the new Logic release. It has MIDI plugins which is something I'm interested in and was never really answered properly when asked in this thread.

Can PT11 and AAX do this kind of stuff that the new version of Logic does? It's very similar to what Ableton Live does with MIDI plugins. I know in Live you can even re-record say a chord plugin to another MIDI track and have all the notes for greater editing. Not sure if Logic can.

It would be nice to see this stuff in Pro Tools assuming the AAX spec allows for it.

Well, EZplayer Pro isn't 64-bit AAX yet but I have indeed enabled the MIDI Out in EZkeys and driven the Mini Grand and the DB-33 successfully, so I can't see why it shouldn't work for other manufacturers.
This is with PT HD 11.0.1 but AFAIK it works with PT since... well, a long while back

John

+1 here.
It is essential for us composers/ producers to become inspired by new sounds, techniques, options and new ways of working and optimizing our workflows. This includes being able to run MIDI in and out of a device to alter commands and soundsources in a chain.
PT is nowhere close to Logic, Cubase, Reaper or Live when it comes to MIDI management. It's poor and uninspiring, slow, unintuitive and there are only very basic options.

We rely more and more on working on our own given the value of our work. This means largely working in MIDI. Maybe it's about time for AVID to pick up on this? Opening up for third party solutions, simply by enabling MIDI in and out of devices would be a small step for AVID but a great step for producers.

AVID, Please recognize this as a serious feature request. We'd rather be able to work in one single DAW. PT was never up to par on MIDI and AVID's lagging behind each day.
Give it a thought and please open up for the use of MIDI through. It's instrumental to us.
Please don't forget that we're the ones using the DAWs. Not the plugin makers. You and plugin makers make our tools.
Our word should mean something, don't you think?

/Erik

Ahoi,

example of how I work:

Insert Sugar Bytes Thesys on an instrument track in Pro Tools.

Make a XPand2 Track. Choose Midi Input: Thesys.

Tweak Arpeggios or Chord Progressions in Thesys as you want.

Record it. No problem.

Go a step further:

Play the Thesys trigger and/or transpose function via your Keyboard and play the Thesys Sequence through XPand2 at the same time. How?

Shift-click BOTH record buttons. Done.

Xpand wont get any note-messages from your keyboard, because the input

is set to Thesys.

Now go and try that in Logic... :)

I do that every day. Even use other stuff via Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.

Add more complexity? Add Fabfilter Volcano to your Xpand-Track.

Control-Click midi-to (output) to set a second midi out from your thesys track. Send the second midi signal to Volcano.

A little + (plus) sign will show up to tell you you're sending to two midi targets at once.

In Volcano choose Filter modulation via Midi trigger.
Instant Filter Envelope triggered by every midi note that comes in.

And all that with only 2 Tracks (!)

No problem at all.

Pro Tools has one of the best internal routing options I've worked with.

Just need to dig a little bit deeper.

Best,

tL.

Xfer Records has said they are releasing Cthulu soon for PT11, which is a midi chord generator, so my guess would be that it is possible to route midi out of an AAX plugin.

I found this thread as I was trying to find out why the midi plugin I have was unable to pick up Midi Out from EZkeys.

I guess it's safe to say that Midi Output for EZkeys is a no go in PT 11.

Is that the case for the RTAS versions as well?

I betatest for Toontrack so I was checking out a midi output from EZkeys since I'm fairly new to Pro Tools and I haven't tried it yet.

All I can say is it would be very handy to have available in Pro Tools.
