Default 001 inputs not working?

A couple of the 1/4" inputs on the back of my 001 only give me very weak signals which are very distored. It is not my mixer, or the mic, or the cable. But if I run the signal from the mixer in and out of my lexicon effects unit, then into the 001, then the signal is fine. What is the problem?
Balanced vs. unbalanced cables?
Dusty input jacks?

Are you running +4 or -10 out of your board? In the Setup>hardware>advanced menu, you can change the gain of your DIGI's inputs to match the gain of your board's outputs. Should take care of it.

How long have you had your unit for? I've gone through 3 of these things. The first 001 was fried ,the second one was in the ballpark of what your getting now except that I got no sound at all out of my right monitor out. Bad luck? Who knows....The interface I got now works fine though. I'd take it back and get a new one if possible. Hope you get it to work.

I have the same problem sometimes with some of the inputs/outputs on the back. The age old solution to the problem... Yell at it, smack it around a bit, and hope it works after that. Seriously though, those inputs just seem really finicky, I have to jiggle the wire around a bit until it makes a good connection in the back. It's a bit annoying, but oh well, what can you do?
