Default RESOLVED: PT 8.0.5 & 11R take like 15m to load

My ProTools 8.0.5 and 11R with latest firmware take, no kidding, like 12-15 minutes or longer to load. I have PC with Vista HP SP2, 4GB ram, huge HD and external approved firewire drive for PT.

I swear, I have spent more time trying to get the 11R/PT setup working than being creative and productive that I tend to use REAPER, Studio One more and more and I WANT to be a PT user but I want to record my guitar more.

ProTools is very inconsistent in terms of detecting the 11R. Also, once it is detected, ProTools loads and I open a project, it can take 3-5m for PT to load the 11R rig settings.

I do run as administrator. I have checked my permissions. I have a good USB cable. I have done all the Vista performance tips. I have done fresh installs of PT.

The only thing I can think of is I also have a M-Audio Firewire 410 but that is naturally turned off and often unplugged when I run PR/11R.

Thank you in advance.

SiSoftware Sandra

Default Re: PT 8.0.5 & 11R take like 15m to load

I don't know if this will help you since computers are so different, but I had a similar issue when I plugged into one of the integrated USB ports on my PC. I had another USB 2.0 PCI card laying around, so I installed it in my computer and plugged only the 11R into it. Problem solved. If you have an open slot, you might try it. USB cards don't cost much--maybe $15.

I'll try anything at this point. On the brink of major remorse for going the 11R / Pro Tools path.

Well your PC is not qualified to run Pro Tools.

The main problem is:

Quote:
Video System
Video Adapter : Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family (PS2.0, PCI)
That is Integrated Graphics. Integrated Graphics are not supported.
You "may" be able to turn off the integrated graphics in BIOS in install a physical video card, then it may work.

Quote:
Pro Tools Windows Computers Require a Dedicated Graphics Controller.

Windows computers with integrated (i.e. northbridge-based) graphics controllers are not supported and may not perform well with Pro Tools. To achieve best results, the system must use a dedicated graphics controller.

For desktop computers this usually means a separate graphics card is installed. For laptop computers, this is usually an option offered at the time of purchase. Desktop computers that do not have a dedicated graphics controller installed will need to install either an AGP or PCIe based graphics controller. PCI or PCIx based graphics controllers are not supported.

Unfortunately, Windows desktop computers without either an available AGP graphics or PCIe graphics slot available, and Laptop computers without a built-in dedicated graphics controller cannot be upgraded to this functionality.

Your ram is mis-matched. You have 2 different brands, which on its own is not necessarily a show stopper, but your timings are also different. At the least you are not getting the performance from the faster ram - since it has to be down clocked, at the worst it can cause instability problems. I strongly suggest ALWAYS buy your Ram in matched pairs/sets from the same manufacturer. Check the QVL for you motherboard to see what ram is approved.
Quote:
CAUTION: Due to the amount of possible configurations, some motherboards might not be able to properly configure memory if the array of DIMMs contains a DIMM that is not from the same manufacturer, has a different CAS latency value, or has a density value (high and low used together). To make sure that the memory you install is compatible, make sure all DIMMs are the same model number and are from the same manufacturer and meet the basic memory requirements for your motherboard. If not, make sure that you can return the memory if it is not recognized by the system after you install the new memory.

DIMMs can only operate as fast as the speed of the system bus. If two or more DIMMs of different speeds are installed, the total speed of all installed memory is as fast as DIMM with the lowest speed.

You do not HAVE to use an external drive for Pro Tools, and if you choose to use an external, it does not HAVE to be Firewire.

USB drives are NOT supported for PT8.x.x but are approved for PT9 on Windows 7.

The best performing external drives are always E-Sata. They will perform at the same or a tiny bit less than internal SATA. You can record to an Internal hard drive. Just do not record to your OS drive. If you choose firewire, then it MUST be an approved chipset.

Quote:
Firewire drives must have the Oxford 911 (FW400 port), Oxford 912 (FW400 & FW800 ports) or Oxford 924 (FW800 ports) Bridge chip.
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=133039

You main OS drive, while it looks to be approved, only has 8MB cache. A drive with 16M cache would work wonders for you, and a 32MBcache would be even better.

I noticed you labeled your Firewire Drive "ProTools". Just to confirm, you did NOT install Pro Tools on this drive did you? All your programs need to be installed on your OS drive.

While I personally have never had a problem with this, Avid suggests that you turn OFF your wireless adapter before running Pro Tools.

Here are the Vista Optimizations to look over again.

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=211077

You may consider uninstalling the drivers for the M-audio 410, just to troubleshoot. Do you have any Adobe products installed, like Photoshop ect... the some drivers installed by some Adobe products need to be disabled or they conflict with Pro Tools.

Consider downloading Ccleaner and cleaning your cache and Registry. Its free. http://www.piriform.com/

Make sure your hard drives are not fragmented. You can defrag using the included Defragger in Vista or download Defraggler, which works better in my opinion. Its also free. http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

Make sure the Eleven Rack is plugged directly into your PC, not into a USB hub. Make sure the Eleven Rack is ON before you turn your PC on.

ALWAYS Run As Admin. Make sure UAC is off.
Run As Admin by Default

Do you have any Anti-virus programs installed?

Also make sure all your Plug-ins are up to date and supported, running out of date plugs, or incompatible plugs, can cause PT to start extremely slow, or not start at all.

It was primarily an active wireless card causing the issue.

Hi guys,
I am having the same problem but it takes like 20-30 min to start up.
This problem started when I updated PT 8.04 to PT 8.05 and running ERXP.
I hope that someone know how to fix this.
Peace Michael

I would still advise you to take Benoni's advice and address all of those issues he mentioned if you aren't already. If you do you should be up and running and playing guitar in no time rather than poking around inside a computer

Did you read Benoni's post and do any of those issues relate to your system?

If you don't know then you will need to provide a Sandra report as did the OP. You can see the value of supplying a Sandra report can't you?
