Maybe this issue is related to:
1 - pro tools graphic optimization (since the garageband's graphics works fine);
2 - macbook's cooling system;

I'm wandering if an eGPU can reduce even more the heat, since the CPU and RAM are running fine with a lot of headroom.

Thank you guys!
I'd give the latter a try if you can borrow one; after all why spend the money and find out it doesn't solve the issue?

Following up on this. Pro Tools driving a 4K monitor slams my RX480 at 100% GPU usage; setting it to open in low resolution fixes this. I wonder if it is an issue that Avid can and will address, or whether it just needs a beefier GPU.

I had an AMD R9 280X which has 3GB of memory and my graphics meter was being slammed.

Changed up to an RX580 (with the downside of having no boot screen) and now have no issues.

Interesting. I'm running a RX480 now and GPU is getting slammed. I am thinking of upgrading to the new Mac Pro and am not sure whether to get the RX580 or wait for the W5700X.

Is anyone comfortably driving a 3840X2160 monitor with Pro Tools? And if so, with which GPU?
