Default HDX Compared to my old HD 4 Accel

I have just started reworking my mix template for episodic TV 5.1. This network requires tons of stems for deliverable and it's a complicated show so It's a pretty big mix session. This used to max out my HD4. No DSP at all. I I 6 1/2 ish DSPs left on my HDX 1 system. I've kept everything really similar because I need to keep compatibility with the other HD4 accel systems in the building. I just thought I'd let everyone know just how powerful an HDX 1 really is. I got to say it's probably more DSP than a HD5. Sounds better and is WAY faster to use. I love this system and it's a huge step forward for all DAW platforms.

I agree,

The HDX system really shows his colors and advantages in big 5.1 sessions. The DSP and native combo make it really powerful. The sessions open much faster and run much smoother than on my previous HD 6 system.

On some projects, I print 8 x 5.1 stems on the same session drive without a hiccup.

HDX is simply amazing.

Thanks for the nice comments. Same experiences on this end and couldn't agree more !!!

Out of curiosity : Did you guys change computers when going from your previous TDM systems to HDX ?

Chris

Brandonx1.....when networks require stems, are the stems always supplied dry, or with FX?

Thanks just curious. It would be great if you'd elaborate on how you do the stems....do you just solo AUX/VCA groups and do real time bounces? On a big show it would take forever it would seem....

Thanks
Tom

Chris,

I use the same 2009 nehalem 8 core computer but the HDX gave it a new life.
I feel I gained not only more DSP power but to my surprise more Native power as well.

Hi Tom,
Stems are really easy if you build the mix correctly. So all the dx, fx, mx, and vo go to sucks where they are limited correctly. The reverb returns are also bussed to those same auxs. So the verbs for fc go the the fx return ect...... Yes the dx stem has dx verb in it. Their is no dx verb stem. If someone wants to change the verb after we have delivered the show, they have to book more studio time. This never happens tho.

After that, it's just addition. I buss the dx, fx, and mx, auxs to the mix - vo master and then to it's record stem. I bus all the auxs to the mix master and them to the mix record bus and the bus which goes to the main monitor controller ect......

Let me know if you need any additional information.
Best

Hi Chris,
I didn't change computers at all. I still use the same custom build computer I did for the hd4. I just too out the magma and dropped in the hdx card. Now if I want to go hdx 2 I need to swap my vid sat computer (6 pcie slots) for my main daw computer (2 pcie slots). I'm actually looking forward to that!

On TDM going back and forth from TDM mixer to RTAS to TDM to Elastic Audio then back to the TDM mixer (and so forth) this took a CPU DSP resources now multiply that by 80 tracks or more on a large session and you have got a lot of CPU DSP just getting wasted on those do nothing conversions.
HDX is so much more efficient because the signal path if 32 bit from start to end.
Thus you will notice a huge gain on Native processing power in HDX.
This fact alone makes HDX upgrade a no brainer upgrade for those doing medium to large scale mixing.

Same 12 core here from HD3 (in Magma chassis) to Native then to HDX1.
Native did feel different but HDX is where I like to be (Like the HD3a).
