Sorry - but what is meant exactly with firmware update?
The firmware of the mac or the firmware of the card?
I thought that I can control the firmware updates in mac os…

the firmware on the HDX cards can not be updated in 1.1 ~ 3.1 Mac Pros
when Pro Tools launches and tries to update the firmware it wipes the HDX cards and can not load the new firmware onto the HDX cards
Someone said they put a HDX card in an older machine after updating it in a newer machine, not really a fair test in my book

Why does a brand new card need a firmware update? Why can't it be delivered in a current state? Can't the reseller do the firmware update before delivery?

Best....H

This remids me of the huge problem I had with my Brand new HD2 Accel Cards in 2007 and the MAc pro 2007 1.1....

My cards needed to be substituted. If you search/google the DUC you may read some users complaining about that ...

a) a reseller would have to brake the packaging seal
then how would you know you are not getting a B-Stock?

b) there could be a firmware update with every release of 10 (10.1.1, 10.1.3, 10.2)
not saying there will be but there could be

Not a fair test of what? If the cards can work in an older Mac after being updated, then they work. The cards firmware just can't be updated on that machine. Avid has implied that they will get fried if you simply try to run them in the unsupported machines. It sounds to me like they're simply making sure that their butts are covered on the liability side of things. If the cards don't in fact run at all in the unsupported machines then that is a different story.

If I buy the product, I can break the seal for them.

I've owned HD for years and have never seen a single firmware update. I did see one on a Sync and there have been a few on the Icon, but I believe those were all on the big version changes.

Part of this appears to be limits on which machines Avid wants to support, which may be different from saying the card won't work on an unsupported machine.

I have spoken to a reseller and gotten the word that the firmware update worked on an older MacPro - it just took a long time, like an hour.

Could someone post a link to Avid's warning that the card could be damaged by a firmware update in one of the earlier MacPros? Is this a known issue or a speculation and a warning related to certain machines not being supported? ("If it breaks in an unsupported machine we won't warranty it.")

Best...H

Max said it would kill the cards and they would need to be sent in for be fixed in the product release web cast.

Note: Avid does not recommend installing HDX cards in a "Harpertown", "Clovertown" or "Woodcrest" Mac Pro. The use of unsupported Mac Pro computers could result in performance problems, the inability to update the firmware of the HDX card and/or the HDX card becoming unusable.

That is still hardly conclusive. Why is it so hard to consider the fact that the new evidence that is creeping in at this point may shed some light on this topic and that Max was not, up to now at least, at liberty to disclose all of the real details.
