thought about this a bit more...i think the answer is because other than the stereo monitor bein' locked to outs1&2, any output can be assigned to any output path. so ADAT outs can all be placed as the active outputs on the output tab, AES/SPDIF too...thus the flexibility is needed for output metering too....just a guess tho anyway...still luv the box despite its' quirks
