Default dvd ram for backup?

Hey guys,
I've got 001 and a g4,is dvd ram a good
way to backup sessions for archive purposes?
I've heard it's slow. How slow?Maybe an intern could sit and wait for it to finish
while I sleep! All opinions are welcome!
Thanks
