Default editing audio regions(and the audio file itself)

here is a subject I dont understand, If anyone can help I seriously appreciate it,
EXAMPLE: I record audio into protools 6.4Le and now I have the audio region showing in the edit window AND the audio file in the audio regions list, so, what I want to do is edit or trim the audio region to only the part I need to use,But I want the audio file itself to be edited to the part I need only, (in other words, I dont want an edited audio region in my session and a
un-edited audio file on my hard drive taking up valuable space, HOW DO I ACCOMPLISH THIS???

P.S- I know how to use the trim tool, and I know how to use the selection tool also, the problem Im having is why my audio file itself is NOT edited, and how to do I accomplish this. HELP

Look up "Compacting" in the Reference Guide

the reference guide is available as a pdf download at the top of the page...you may also wish to look at "destructive editing", although it would be safer to use non-destructive and compact afterwards

Just cut the waveform you want to keep. Use 'B' on the keyboard to cut a region. You've got one long region. OK, got to the start of the area you want to keep, press B. go to the end of the area you want, press B. You now have three regions. Click (make sure the region you want is fully selected) then duplicate it. Clear the ones you don't want from the Edit window. Then go 'select unused regions', 'delete unused'.

1-Trim your region.
2-select your region
3-select the menu:
edit>consolidate (Option+Shift+3)

Now you have a new file whit only the edited region!

PD.Sorry for my bad english.

Using "consolidate" requires more disk space (until you delete the original)... using "compact" trims out the extra audio and allows you to keep handles (space on either side of the region in the file) for crossfades.
