Of course! Legato sounds are THE most difficult to stretch or compress. The distortion to the original form will manifest clearly with stretch marks, cracks, scars and all sorts of audio junk. These sounds even untrained ears have time to detect.

Any option that can handle this task will more than likely find short sounds easy to deal with.

Up until now, if I'd wanted to do that kind of grid-accurate quantizing with live multitrack drums, I would overdub cymbals, in order to avoid stretching artefacts.

I would always prefer advances like these, rather than more free synths etc.

Good work Avid!

how do you quantize multi-mic'd drums without ruining the phase relationships between the mics??

Just make sure all the drum tracks are in the same edit group

+1️⃣

Pretty sure that is the key to preserving phase coherence with any multi-mic setup. From memory, you will want to create a group and add new takes as necessary before the editing commences i.e. on recording rather than afterwards. With the channels named Kick, Snare etc at all in a Drums group. Add new playlist for Drums and select it for the first take. The relevant channels should then show Kick.01, Snare.01 etc.

Take several take. Grab the best one and put copy it to the first Drums playlist (Kick, Snare etc.) Edit away with EA and dropping any better parts in from alternative takes as required. Enjoy!

Right! Quantize by preserving the phase relationships is the way to go.

Nerdy details for anyone interested:

Where the value is zero before stretching, the value should be zero after stretching. If the value is 1 before, then it should be 1 after, ideally, if phase is preserved totally.

That would be done physically and digitally by moving the "in phase" elements in connected relationship.

That is the Edit Group. Then, all the relationships of timing (phase and level on the milli and micro scale), are preserved.

Anywhere one track moves left, and the other right or not the same amount left, the previously well mic'd audio will lose phase.

That said, maybe the part to quantize will needs adjustment, and the edit group shows more than one analysis marker depending on the mic, meaning you'd be adjusting the warp marker too to make sure you're quantizing the right spot to desired timing.
