Default 3rd party midi interface not compatible on G5?

So...I was in a session last week on a rather new "compatible" G5 using Mbox an PT LE 6.4.
To my dismay I was having problems with clitchy audio when overdubing @ 256 and 512.. hmmm
The latency is horrible @ 1024 buffers (unusable really) 512 (when it kinda worked) caused a
modulation effect and even printed to the new audio file (sounded like a D-Fi plug-in or something)
This was real bummer and I lost a client due to these unexceptible anomilies.
After my client left in a huff to go fininsh up his project at a Logic Audio studio..I desided to
read up on the compato docs to see it I missed any thing..
Sure enough in black in white the compato docs read something like: G5's are not compatible with 3rd
party MIDI interfaces, Digidesign suggest to purchase a MIDI I/O.. this is totally lame.
- Thanks Digi

I have a miditime piece and it seems to work fine. A lot of people use the Motu MTP, I would highly doubt its not compatible.

I do have a control surface but even with it off and unpluged I still have problems.

From the compato Docs for G5:
System instabilities and performance issues can occur when using MIDI control surfaces in conjunction with Pro Tools 6 and 3rd party MIDI interfaces. For best multiport MIDI performance, we recommend using Digidesign's MIDI I/O.

Hmm. doesn't Make a lot of sense. I have a Emagic AMT8 and it works great with Digi 002R, both on a Dual 500 G4 and now on a dual 2Ghz G5.

What brand do you have that "doesn't work" with your G5? I know I had to ditch my Opcode Studio 4 because of the serial interface, but I've had no problems on the AMT8.

To be clear, here's exactly what the compatability docs say on MIDI interfaces:

MIDI Interfaces
Built-In
The Digi 002 includes a built-in MIDI interface with 1 MIDI In port and 2 MIDI Out ports, providing up to 16 channels of MIDI input and up to 32 channels of MIDI output. (only with Digi 002, cannot be used as a standalone MIDI interface)

Additional — USB Only
The following MIDI Interfaces are also qualified for use with Digi 002 systems with Pro Tools LE version 6.4 software for Mac OS X:
Digidesign MIDI I/O - USB MIDI interface with 10 MIDI I/O ports, supporting 160 MIDI channels
Emagic AMT8/MT4
Roland MPU64/UM2/UM4

Known Incompatibilities & Issues
Only USB MIDI interfaces are compatible with Pro Tools systems for Mac OS X. Modem-to-serial port adapters and serial MIDI devices are not supported.

System instabilities and performance issues can occur when using MIDI control surfaces in conjunction with Pro Tools 6 and 3rd party MIDI interfaces. For best multiport MIDI performance, we recommend using Digidesign's MIDI I/O. (only if additional MIDI ports are required beyond the 16 in/32 out built into the Digi 002)

So while it says that the MIDI I/O works well, it also says USB only. Where they say qualified means they've tested it extensively, but it's by no means a be all end all list.
