Default Honestly, who uses a mac mini?

I am curious on their performance. I may be way off! I have an i7 MBP and an i5 desktop PC. I am looking for a mac on a budget that can match my desktop pc performance but isn't going to break the bank!.. seriously! I'm not going to be able to afford the new ashtray (Mac Pro). But I am looking for something I can permanently keep by my desk.

So I am looking at a mac mini, basic ram (intend to go 16gb manually rather than paying £240 from apple), 1TB HD, 2.6GHz Intel i7.

Does anyone else use a mac mini in their PT setup and what performance have you experienced? I will be using a MOTU 828 mk3, PT10/11. But my sessions will be getting quite track heavy so will need that power to work.

Open discussion. Any advice... (And no, don't just say buy a mac pro!) I wish.

Using one here to great success. Small to mid-size sessions mostly, (with the occasional larger session) with zero PT hiccups (that weren't pilot error) so far. have had it just under a year, and it is used for PT almost every day.

One thing that is a major problem is heat dissipation with the Mini's. I have one I use for Photoshop and web work and it gets a little too hot for my comfort after a while. I have the case elevated off the table top to get some airflow around it (the Mini air intake is through the circular cover on the bottom and exhausts out the back where the I/O ports are). I would not use it for long term audio work even if the price is attractive.

I'd look into a refurb Mac from Apple. They're a good money deal and come with full AppleCare.

I've seen the i7 server run well with light to medium use.

I use one without any issues. Sessions from 10-100 tracks. Plugins galore. Even better with PT11

No probs over here. Use PT extensively with a 003 console and the mac mini is great.

Doesn't even get hot on large sessions. I keep mine a little elevated, like the person above me also said, to help with cooling but that's just a habit i've got from using laptops.

One thing though, I did be sure to buy 16gig of ram from mr memory for about 60quid as soon as the MM arrived. I think that's helped because this has barely broken a sweat.

Had Logic pro x and PT running at the same time the other day no probs. Highly recommend for low budgets.

Hello,

We use quad-core Minis, fastest available, with ProTools HD Native and with Nuendo. Performance is great for the price and convenience. We deal with heat by modifying the air flow, this keeps the Mini CPU 12degC cooler than stock and the GPU 9degC cooler. (Of course we would never modify anything to void the warranty! Of course!)

Works fine in PT HD Native, performance is more telling in Nuendo as we couple them with MadiFX cards and record up to 192 tracks on large projects, works great.

Hugh
