Default Getting a new computer

I'm getting a new Mac Pro really soon, but i have some questions.
I currently have PT 7.3 on my mac book pro, i have a 003 rack. I want to install PT 8 on my new machine, but i'm not sure if i need to install 7.3 first and then buy the update or if there's a way i can install 8 directly.
Makes sense? Please help!!!!

PT 8 is a full install. You don't need 7.3 on your computer. In fact, it's reccommended you uninstall it first before you put 8 on. If you're getting a new computer, just install 8 and don't worry about 7.3.

No. just buy the PT8 package and install it. Digi causes confusion by calling version 8 an upgrade when it is, in fact, the complete install that does not require any previous version. The PT8 package includes a card with a registration number and you will go online and register the purchase. Then Digi will email you(in minutes) the authorization code you will need the first time you open version 8.

FYI: You new computer will probably come with OXS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) which has not been approved for Protools (any version including 8.0 and 8.0.1) yet. Some folks have it working with little or no problems while some are having some issues. Hopefully Digidesign will complete the testing soon and release a compatible upgrade soon. Don't forget you need to have a second hard drive (not a partition) for the audio.

Thanks so much! Where do i get the PT8 package? I called Apple about snow leopard and they told me i'd probably have to buy the previous version if i want it, but i'd get a free upgrade when i'm ready. Which is kinda dumb...

You can order/buy the "upgrade," which is really a full install from the DigiStore. It is normally available as a large download (>4GB), but for a little more you can get the DVD.

Apple is pushing everyone to get Snow Leopard so it is actually "counter productive" to provide Leopard to new customers. Unfortunately you are caught in the "in between" period where Apple has released a new OS and Digidesign has not released an update that works with it yet.
