Default Complete Format and reinstall? or any other idea?

Hi all,

I used to be able to work on PT sessions from the internal Macintosh HD drive.

But now it gives me an DAE error -9060 -9031 and others instantly after hitting play.

No problem with the external FW drive.

I've done so far:
- Check drive is set to R in Workspace
- Clear Prefs and DB
- Repair permissions in disk utility
- Reinstall and update PT software 8.05
- Run Repair Disk in Disk utilities. The disk is HFS+ Journalled
- Reinstall Mac OSX and update to 10.6.8 (without reformat)

But the errors keeps appearing. very frustating because it worked flawlessly one week ago.

Last resort would be a complete FORMAT. How should I format? Or can you suggest any other thing I should try before this drastic measure.

(Backups are done)

Thanks very much!!!

Are you saying you're getting the problems when just using your system internal hard drive for PT to Record to but not when using the firewire drive to record to? Why not just record to the external drive and leave the system drive to do it's original job of hosting the system stuff like programs?

Here's a link to an Avid page on dae 9060 errors:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...oductCategory=

And here's a link to a page on the combo of 9060 and 9031 errors:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...oductCategory=

Neither of these remedies entail reformatting your system drive.

Hi thanks for the reply!

I know it's not recommended to use the internal HD, but these are simple sessions which used to perform just fine off the internal HD.

A corrupt audio or fade file is also not the case here. The same sessions unplayable on Mac HD, play back fine on external FW drive.

So use the external drive and be done with it. Doesn't matter if it's what you call a simple session or not - it's not recommended to use the system drive. With the system drive you're trying to make the drive read and write data from the same drive it's also getting program and system stuff from with a single read/write head. No single head device can do that - it's physically impossible.

.
Since it's recommended to use an external drive for recording - you must have been lucky I guess....

Just an update.
My solution to a problem is not to ignore it.

We have 9 PT stations at our facility and all of them are perfectly capable of playing back a session off the internal HD.
I can assume the performance limitation this may have but I can not accept when it does not work at all, giving all sorts of cryptic errors. Because it's an indication that something is broken.

Thanks anyways, I finally reformatted and reinstalled all and it's working now.
My guess is that the HD somehow got flagged as invalid for protools.

We never said to ignore it. What was said multiple times is to run PT sessions off an external drive like the Avid recommendations say to do. Count yourself lucky it's working for you NOW; that doesn't mean you won't have problems in the future and will need to use an external drive. Why flirt with problems you know can be correctly fixed?

Very simply, Avid does not support running sessions off the system drive. So I don't know how to offer help on a system that is not supported.

PT 10 and later are a lot less fussy about this and configuration in general.

Still Avid had not and probably will not back off this recommendation. Either way it's not a good idea to run sessions off your system drive.
