Default upgrading Apple hardware to stay current

I currently have:
MacPro late 2013
processor 3Ghz 8 -Core Intel Xeon E5
64 GB 1866 Mhz DDR3
Graphics AMD Firepro D500 3GB
running ProTools Ultimate
Looking to make as painless an upgrade as possible to new MacPro.
Any experienced points of view on how to attain this goal, would be most welcome to hear if someone has travelled this road recently.
Thank you. Jon Pousette-Dart

Hi, welcome to the community.

Mac Studio is what you need.

What interface are you using? Do you want PCIe slots in your new Mac Pro/are are you using a Thunderbolt chassis now with your Trashcan?

Does your current interface have drivers/support for Apple Silicon? Or are you looking at purchasing a new interface?

There has been no new Mac Pro released, one was widely expected this year, now it's expected 2023. The Mac Studio is very impressive, better than a Trashcan, but it's not a real expandable Pro "Mac Pro" just like the Trashcan was not either. You might be best off waiting if you want PCIe slots and/or capability beyond the Mac Studio.

Hey Jon. Been ages!

A Mac Studio with similar memory will probably do what you need, and will give a big performance boost. Since you posted in this subforum, it's worth assuming that you have either an HDX or HD-Native-based system. Since you say you have a 2013 Mac Pro, if that's so, you have those cards in a PCI-e Expansion Chassis. (unless you have an HD-Native Thunderbolt box) That right?

Check out Avid's System Requirements.

and also check out if your PCI-e Chassis is on the currently-supported list for any computer you might buy. (Assuming you have a chassis and cards)

If you have an HD-Native PCI-e card, know that there seems to be a specific problem with otherwise-officially-supported PCI chassis using a Mac Studio or 2021 MacBook Pro. It is not a problem with HDX cards and has not been reported on Mac Minis or the newer M1 Macs. But it is worth noting that the HD-Native PCI-e card is about to fall out of it's end-of-life support, so it may be worth looking at another interface option if that's what you currently use. The HD-Native Thunderbolt box, however, does work fine and is currently supported.
