Default Recording Vinyl into 7.4 - Flanging problem

Hey guys,

I'm using M-Powered Pro Tools 7.4 to record my vinyl to .WAV files.

I open up a new session, create a stereo track, then play the record to check the levels and get them at an optimal level.

I notice that as soon as I arm the track to record, all of sudden there is a slight to not-so-slight flanging effect on the music, especially noticeable on the drums.

This flanging effect does come through on the recording.

Anyone else experienced this? It's really frustrating, because basically I can't record my vinyl! The flanging effect is that bad that it's unacceptable.

Please help if you can.

Does the turntable sound okay if played through another preamp?
How are you linking to PT? USB turntable or external RIAA preamp?
Are you using any plug-ins?

i have the turntable going through a BBE pre-amp, into the back of the M-Audio Firewire 410. What exactly is RIAA?

Everything sounds fine, until I arm the track to record. Then you hear the flange.

My friend told me to try messing with the Monitoring, i switched it to Audio Input Monitoring (Green light off) and that seemed to help, although i'm not convinced it's 100% gone.

Hi, it sounds to me like the audio is looping back on itself into the record channel. Have you got an internal or external mic switched on ? Try recording a small section with the main op switched off or muted. If it's ok it means the audio is coming back on itself.

Try Jim’s suggestion.

The RIAA curve is built into phono preamps to compensate for the physical shortcomings of vinyl.

thanks for your help guys. It seems to be working fine now. Not sure what did it, i think was switching from Input only to Audio Track monitoring....I checked for internal mic, or something else that would be causing the looping/flanging....didn't find anything.
