Default SMPTE time code in digital audio signal?

If I load a DAT encoded with SMPTE time code via S/PDIF from a time code DAT machine into my digi001, is the audio "stamped" with that time code? Or do I have to manually set the session start time? This is time of day, free-run SMPTE time code. A client has asked for an AIFF backup on DVD of a 2-day location recording job.

Thanks for your response.
Is it even possible to make an AIFF stamped with the original DAT's SMPTE? If so, can I do it using the 001 and PTLE 5.1.1?
Thanks,
MJ

I do not know of a way to do it with your system.

I don't know of any system that will embed the timecode in with the audio data. Sorry I was so vague. Still trying to think of a way and nothing is coming up.

If you feed the SMPTE from the DAT machine (7030 or whatever) into a SMPTE->MTC converter and record via S/PDIF online so that Pro Tools is chasing the incoming MTC... then the Region created will be time stamped correctly. (You won't see the SMPTE timestamp unless you have DV Toolkit though).

While your client has asked for AIFF files.. be aware that BWF (WAV) would be a better option for 3rd party apps. Which apps will he be loading the AIFF files into?

OK, now that we have the region with the right time code how do we put it on DVD with it? Are you thinking that you would save the ProTools session to have the timecode for backup or use some other method.

excellent. I knew there must be a way.

will the dv toolkit work with 5.1.1 LE (OS 9.2.2). is it hardware or software? how much is it?

can you recommend a SMPTE->MTC converter?

they want AIFF because they are using final cut pro.

thanks a lot for your reply!

I don't believe there is a standard for time stamped AIFF files like there is for for WAV (BWF)... so the way Pro Tools time stamps AIFF files may not work with Final Cut. Ask them about BWF files which is the industry standard for sharing time stamped files. (AIFF-C files have time stamps which are interchangable, but regular AIFF files don't).

You can simply burn the audio files to a DVD as data files and they'll have their time stamps embedded.

MOTU make a variety of MIDI boxes which have SMPTE to MTC converters.

DV Toolkit is not required to actually time stamp the files.. only if you wish to see the time stamps as a SMPTE value in LE. DV Toolkit is available from your Digidesign dealer and works with 6.1 and later.
