Default Re: Hard drive pre- intel, post- intel

alternative to Glyph is OWC www.macsales.com

The Mercury Elite Al-Pro (empty) duel eSATA with a pair of WD Caviar Blacks or Hitachi Ultrastars is a good option.

IMPORTANT: ---> to boot a SuperDuper MacIntel clone the entire drive (not individual partitions) needs to be formatted GUID) however ----> audio should be recorded to HFS+ (Apple partition) and you cannot mix and match GUID and Apple Partitions on a single drive. So either buy two, or a duel (with Firewire you won't have these G-5 SATA early controller issues). Check the storage section here regarding enclosures.

Seagate Barracudas vs 12s (newest versions) SATA II can be pinned down to SATA 1.5) depending on Model of G-5 and how you connect as in if using eSATA direct to the PCI adapter (fits any PCI, PCI-X, PCIe slot) but buy a 3 ft SATA cable to connect it's eSATA port to the mobo from this adapter that comes with the Elite AL Pro Duel eSATA (empty). Just two eSATA ports, no port multiplier, an off on switch, quiet fan and DC in. It also comes with a pair of 4 foot decent cables.

Firewire cables buy pro cables at www.granitedigital.com with ferrite beads (ditto with USB). USB www.kimber.com

Only the early model G-5s had this SATA 2 over 1.5 controller issue. Not relevant if using an Oxford 934 chipset Firewire 400. Post back here for instructions or in storage section how to pin down a vs 12 Seagate SATA II, 7,200 rpm Barracuda to SATA 1.5 if installing it inside a G-5 on occasion (add pin) or if using the eSATA to onboard SATA at the mobo option with the enclosed PCI eSATA to SATA adapter.

So the Mercury Elite AL Pro eSATA duel (2x3.5 inch drives) can be purchased 'empty'. It has a quiet slow spinning fan and DC in, two eSATA locking connectors and a pair of 4 ft eSATA cables and Auto sensing 50/60 cycles 120-240 volt brick style transformer. But the cool little item included is that PCI (e,x) eSATA to SATA adapter that you screw into an empty slot. Then simply run a SATA cable to a SATA mobo socket. Awesome if your Computer doesn't have eSATA.

I would keep drives similar (as in SATA II) not one SATA III and one SATA II. Just because of controller issues, who knows if and what problems might arise. SATA II bandwidth can handle 5 drives per eSATA connection with a port multiplier express 34 or PCI or PCIe/x card. No raid, no JBOD-SPAN, just straight eSATA to SATA (independent mode)
