Default 002 observations

I got my 002 the other day (audiomidi.com) and have a few observations. I'm sure there will be new revelations as I continue to use it. But for now, here's what I've found.

The faders feel great. They're not as smooth as the Pro Control but better than the Control 24.

The transport buttons feel very sloppy. Way too much travel and spongy feel.

All of my pan knobs (except one) have sticky spots where it feels like they're rubbing against something.

The master "mute" button causes a pop out of the monitor outputs.

I also hear a pop when I plug drives into the firewire passthrough port on the 002.

The preamps are a lot better than I thought they'd be.

I'd love this to have a scrub/shuttle wheel.

I'd also love for this to function as a standalone TDM control surface.

It's bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. It has a footprint about the same size as a turntable.

Lastly, I sorely miss a pair of dedicated digital meters for 1-2 output. I don't need them on each channel, but a master pair would be choice.

Don't get me wrong, this thing is way cool. I totally love it.

One problem in operation so far, I no longer can use the 'Digidesign' output in the 'Sound' control panel. I can choose it, but it simply doesn't work. I am unable to monitor iTunes through the 002. Any solutions/patches I don't know about?

I noticed that they "wiggle" a little bit, and the "throw" or "travel" is indeed pretty deep, but it hasn't really bothered me in actual use.

A couple of mine were doing the same. They're just "push on" knobs, and they're pressed on a bit too far, and are rubbing against the top surface of the unit. If you grab one (with your fingers only please) and pull firmly straight up, the knob will come off. Just press it back on, but don't over-press. Problem solved.

Agreed. Certainly in another class when compared to the Digi 001's mic preamps.

Me too... but I have not missed it as much as I thought I would. The navigation is pretty good.

About 19" X 17". I've got mine on a Quiklok roll around stand, sitting next to my console. It's about the same size as an old Alesis BRC.

At least they put calibration marks on the hardware faders - I'd REALLY like it if they'd do that for the level meters in the software!

And speaking of faders, I have noticed that the Digi 002's faders prefer to be used with your finger in the "detent" on the top of the fader. If you grab the sides (or top / bottom), I think the touch sensitive switching has a harder time figuring out you "grabbed" the fader and it doesn't always immediately "release" it and it might "fight" you for an instant or two. Somewhat annoying, but not a major concern... you just have to hold 'em differntly.

Don't get me wrong, this thing is way cool. I totally love it.

So far, I've been pretty darn impressed. A lot of thought went into this puppy.
