He does differentiate between recording and mixing. His tutorial/advice is on recording levels. Pre fader is a good idea obviously. I wonder what his thoughts would be since the clip gain feature was introduced in Pro Tools. Especially considering 32 bit float? But I always record in 24 bit. It's interesting though; considering that whether analog or digital, we are still going for the best level that minimizes noise (signal too low) as much possible; and prevents clipping (signal too high) by all means possible. Signal to noise ratio---duhh!!

And keeping those busses happy is critical. Especially considering how easy they are to set up. There really is an art to all this. Really!! :)

So let me ask a question - all the studios running large consoles, what levels are they sending to pro tools? B/c they are surely running hotter that -10 on the desk itself

Ive done some research on AAX - VU meters ,

I have found the PSP - 2 Meters plugin has had New Updates in late January 2014 , to give it more functionality .

Strangely enough though PSP have not yet listed these important updateson their website ?

Apart from being AAX compatable ( which the klanghelm is not)

...,The latest PSP 2 meters update address many of the complaints Ive read in this tread (or other forums) when comparing the PSP 2 Meters it to the klanghelm.

Here are the update details ...........................,

PSP 2Meters Version History
----------------------

PSP 2Meters 2.1.0:
- added Precise Measure method,
- added Trimmer for fast and easy level adjustment,
- added Active button to enable active processing (gain trim) of the meter,
- added Lag Time Control for visual latency compensation of meters,
- added rear panel calibration preferences overview for mono versions of meters,
- shortened time interval to load calibration preferences into a mono meter version,
- fixed DC filtering for proper low frequency metering (measurement),
- added editeable track label tape,
- improved VU needle response,
- fixed few bugs

PSP 2Meters 2.0.2
- fixed samplerate bugs

PSP 2Meters 2.0.1
- reduced cpu usage for all plugins (especially for VU2 plugins),
- added 64 bit AAX plugins for PT 11,
- improved level indication for stereo/mono plugins,
- fixed AAX parameters registering

PSP 2Meters 2.0.0 release.

But it works great if you have a VST host like Blue Cat Audio's Patchwork.
