Default can't import .wmv file

I can import .dv and .mp4 files into a new video window no problem but when I convert those same files to .wmv using avc free for Mac it is greyed out in the import window and can't be dragged in. The reference manual says you can import and export .wmv.

Started with a .mod file and had to use toast to convert as PT won't take that either.

Can you open the file in quicktime, cause that's what PT is using.
Usually you can't open such files on a mac unless you have the wmv components, but not sure if adding those ads the functionality to PT

I can open it and play it in VLC and AVC but not in QT or Toast. I was trying to use wmv because I thought youtube couldn't take quicktime but I have since found out it can so I'll forget about wmv but it still bugs me that I can't use it when the manual says I can.

You will have to buy flip4mac to convert it to dv stream. wmv and mp4 is not a preferred format to work with on PT.

correct, PT uses quicktime, not VLC for playback... this is why you're getting issues.

Youtubes back end is all H.264, so you should be able to upload that codec.

On a separate, but related note. Quicktime(mac) users out there should all download the free wmv components as well as the fantastic free Perian plugin, both will enable further playback of a variety of codecs in QT

I believe WMV Import and Export is on Windows only.

As for uploading H.264 to YouTube, what does that have to do with anything?!

Get Flip4Mac player (free) then open in QuickTime and export as something like a ProRes.

I have a paid version of Flip4Mac. Pro Tools 8.01 on Mac will not load my .wmv files, "Invalid video media file". Quicktime player plays them.

wmv files can not be played by PT. They must be converted to any quicktime format. DV and Mjepg are recommended.

Yes, true, I was responding to an implication in an earlier post that .wmv movies can be played in QT with the right codec. BTW, where does the manual say that .wmv can be imported? I don't have the manual memorized or anything, but I don't recall that.
