Default Loco for latency

Windows XP SP2|Pro Tools 7.3|Mbox2|Fantom S-88--I'm running a midi cable from the OUT of my Fantom S synth to the IN of my Mbox 2. I can record MIDI through Xpand (and while recording, everything sounds fine), but upon playback there are extra notes, skipped notes, and just an overall playback mess. I've done the recommended steps to increase processing speed. I've set the synth to slave-midi and MMC to slave, turned off local, etc. I'm pretty sure I've configured Pro Tools properly as well, but I guess not. Please, experts...I need you.

Try this:
I would suggest turning off all that sync and MMC crap.. If you are triggering a VI in Protools and recording the MIDI there as well, then all you really need from the Fantom is for it to act as a controller. If you are using The Fantom as the sequencer and need PT to sync up, that's a different story.

MIDI thru must be on

Make a stereo Aux track. Insert Xpand
Make a MIDI track. Leave it's input set to all and set it's output to "Xpand> channel 1"

Record enable the track. You should now be able to play your keys, getting the meter moving on the MIDI track and the AUX. Now, start recording.

What happens now when you playback?

Same story. I'm not sure I know how to turn off syncing capabilities from the synth. But from PT I unchecked "use MTC" and unchecked both MMC slave/master to midi. Midi through is certainly checked.
