Done with mix, Bouce with high quality QT

I've received a movie (.mov) from a client as well as the audio OMF. I converted the .mov using QT pro to an NTSC video. (consequently the .mov was 1080i 24p) After finishing the mix, I delivered the the stems and final mixdown.

My question is this, Can I layback at my home studio to that original QT. I'd like my music to match the higher def pic for my reel. Is this possible? I know that I can bounce a QT file from the timeline, though it's the ntsc version, and I'd like to use the 1080i.

I have done this on several projects but have used final cut studio 2 to re-sync an Aiff of the final mix to the original picture.

This is fairly easy with QT Pro.

• Export an AIFF (or if you're worried about size, a high bitrate mp3) that's exactly the length of the original QT.
• Open original .mov in QT.
• In "Window" menu, select show movie properties.
• Select the existing soundtrack and delete .
• Close movie properties window.
• Select all "Command+A"
• Copy "Command+C"
• Open exported AIFF file in QT
• While AIFF is forward in QT, in the edit menu, select "Add to selection & scale"

Save your new file.

This is basically copying the original file, video only, on top of your exported final soundtrack. Works like a charm.

I do it this way as well to avoid any conversions of the video.

It works great and is easy. Just make sure that your audio files has the same lead in and out time as the video clip.

Hello Stephen:

With all due respect, don't use the "Add to selection and scale" function! Unless Quicktime calculates an *exact* match between lengths of the audio and video media, it will stretch one or the other.

Open the video first, and simply use an old-fashioned 2-pop or something similar (like audio on the first frame of picture), and then use the arrow keys in Quicktime to nudge by one frame increments. Find your in point and paste the audio over the video using "Add to movie".

This is much safer, and you don't have to worry about the video and audio being the same length.

Then, save as self contained movie. The video codec remains the same, and your audio is any resolution you want it, with no stretching!

Appreciate your concern Nathaniel. Doing spot work, it's fairly easy for me to export a sound file that is the exact length of the original QT. Just highlight the QT and record a mix back into a stereo pair using those marks. It's worked a charm for me on an almost daily basis. This is also why I stressed the "exactly" in my post. If your tracks don't match, and you proceed as I've directed, QT will indeed slow down or speed up the picture to match the length of the mix. Nobody wants that.
