New G4 dual boot Panther/os9 issue
Just bought a new dual 1.25 G4 with panther. It works quite well with PT LE 6.2.2 9( digi 001) I partitioned the Main HD to install OS9.2 on the second partition.
I have learned I cannot install 9.2.2 from a 9.2 disk because of hardware issues with this newer machine. ( installer will not run ) and tells me it is not compatable. This IS a new dual boot g4 with FW400 drives ( not the 800 ) when I run the os9 installer from the panther disc it will only let me install OS9 on a partition that has OS 10.3 installed. Seems to defeat the purpose of partitioning. This is NOT classic mode I can reboot from the drive in OS9. Has anybody done this? Run pt 6.2.2 from one partition booting OSX and running other apps or PT 5.3 from another partition booting to os9 even though there is OSX on the same partition. One friend told me he just dragged the OS9 folders from the OSX partition to the OS9 partition and booted from that. Thank you for your experience in advance Brad

Re: New G4 dual boot Panther/os9 issue
I can understand your confusion but it's Apple's fault. In trying to turn users to OSX, Separate OS 9 installers have been missing from the startup kit since the Mirror Door G4 came out. While many think that OS 9.2.2 is the same system for all computers there have been modifications made to the Mac OS ROM and other components to support newer CD-R drivers, ATA-100 and other components. Unfortunately, this means that your $149 OS 9 universal installer wont work on these machines and there was never released a fix for this available to the general public. But this doesn't mean that a newer OS 9.2.2 installer doesn't exist. In fact, Apple did make such an installer for the US Edu market, which is still relying on OS 9 for many schools and institutions. If you call Apple US they can provide you with such an installer.
An easier way around is to make two (or more) partitions on your HD and install OS X on one partition. Then install the OS9 that comes with this machine and move the "System Folder" plus the "Applications (OS 9)" and "Documents" folder to the new drive. Then startup from this new drive and install PT 5.1.1 on it. That should do the trick. Good luck! xoxo pv |

Re: New G4 dual boot Panther/os9 issue
Thanks I'll give it a shot.
As far as the earlier reply, you need to boot off the OSX installer ,and choose utilities. There is a nice little partition app, but you will erase your hard drive so back up what you need first Brad
