Wink Drum Mics...

Okay, I personally like the sound replacement theory for drums and I use strike for my stuff....BUT.....I have a couple clients who will have nothing to do with that and want their personal drum sounds. So....
Im set up for that, nice big room, used to miking up a live kit with high dollar mics in the studios I worked for....BUT...now! im on my own and I need to get as much bang for my buck as possible...So who can tell me the best REASONABLE priced mics for kick, snr, toms and overheads...maybe $400-$500 range..any brilliant ideas? Or anybody find that $200 mic that sounds like $3000...LOLOLO

Here is what I have been doing.
Sennheiser 421 kick
EV PL9 (I have 3 of them from ebay) for snare/tom
AKG C452b overhead (hot highs-must be eqd -- I have 2)
I do not mount anything on the drums....I use stands with shock mounts.

Here's what I use with good results without breaking the bank.

Kick - Heil PR40
Snare - Heil PR20ut
Toms - CAD M179 (can get a 3 pack for $399)
OH's - M-Audio Pulsar II's

I also have a D6 kick mic for a more aggressive sound.

Kick-Audix D6
Snare-SM57(Granelli's 5790)
Hat-AT3031 or EV PL37
Toms-Sennheiser e604
overheads-MXL 2001
Ride-EV PL37

Shop the used market for deals. The AT3031 is discontinued, but sounds really good on hat(ALMOST as good as a KM84). Used Audix i5's are a good option for snare or high toms. AT3035 is another decent overhead or low tom mic. EV PL35 is another decent tom mic.

$400 to $500 total? Difficult. AKG D112 (for kick drum) at $199 and a pair of Shure SM57's (as overheads) at $99 each for a total of $397. A little better would be a pair of AKG C1000 (for overheads) at $199 each but that would bump the total up to $597.

If you don't mind buying a mic kit, take a look at Sweetwater. Check out this link: http://www.sweetwater.com/c982--Drum...ndles/low2high

They show 8 kits that come in under your target of $500. Audix, Shure and Samson are represented.
