If a sales-dood told me that I wouldn't walk away....I'd run away. As tele player said, there are quite a few nice sounding mics available in that price range. I personally have a Rode NT1-A and I am about to get one of the Rode K2's, but that is a little more than you are wanting to spend. The K2 is about $700.00 at most places I have seen.

I love my 414 TLII; I can use it on just about everything too. I have an NT1, 4033a, C3000 also and only after buying the 414 did I realize I should've just saved up & gotten it right off the bat; not wasting time trying to get a uncompromised vocal with a compromised budget mic. Now I want another so I can have a pair for drum overheads. They certainly have uses, but the others just sit most of the time now unless I need a bunch of mics simultaneously.

I really want to try the NTK soon too though, everybody says it's the cats ***** for $400.

The Audio Technica stuff is great (4033/4040, 4047, 4050, 4060). I personally wouldn't choose an AKG 414 for vocals. If you do go that route I'd opt for the TL II model. The Soundelux U195 is an amazing mic, and even though it's at about $1000 it's a great value in my opinion.
The Rode NTK, NT1000's might be worth looking into.
I find that the NTK isn't as airy and open as the Soundelux U195.

For vocals I love the AKG 414. For under 200 bucks the Studio Projects C1 rules. The 414 usually makes the vocal sit in the mix perfectly; the C1 is warm, clean, full and can be used on lots of stuff.

We just finished recording an Opera live in NYC and we used two center mics going to two discreet record tracks and would then decide which mic to go with as the center track in an LCR stereo recording. The two center mics were a Nuemann U87i and a NADY SCM1000. Everyone from the singers, composer and musicians to the producers and engineers down liked the $99.00 NADY SCM1000 over the $2000.00 Nuemann!! Personally I agree (on this job I simply rented the equipment and provided technical assistance). I've been quite amazed at how good these condensors sound against Mics costing significantly more. And I love and use my Nuemann a lot. In fact the entire VO track for the Sundance winning documentary "Super Size Me" was recorded with the Nuemann.

Don't forget about Audio-Technica. Their AT4040 AT4033 and AT4047 are excellent.

People laugh at me when I talk about this mic, but that Nady SCM-1000 is a suprisingly nice mic! I find myself using it more and more. I would really like to see what some other think of this mic.

I don't have any serious high dollar mics. My mic of choice is a Shure KSM32. It is really smooth and works great for close mic vocals. I am planning on picking up a Rode NTK (must see what the rave is) or a TLM 103 in the future.

thejewdrummer, what is your vocal chain, 001, 002, mBox or some ext pre?
Are you planning on adding a pre or anything else?
I would shop for a vocal path not just a vocal mic, even if I couldn't afford them now I would have a path so when you get there the components will perform well together without continual changes.
Doesn't seem like you are shopping for a highend mic but most of the suggestions are good.
NTK, NT2, NT1000
SP C-1
AT-4040/4033/4050
C414 which version is personal preference (stay away from the lowend akg's)
TLM103
Possibly a Baby Bottle
Still remember what you plug it into has a major effect just as mic choice does.
