Default ad/da convertor

hello i am currently using the digi002 rack all 8 inputs via a mackie mixer, I also use both s/pdif ports n my mic preamp so I have 10 channels. I want 2 upgrade 2 an adta recorder 2 max out @ 18 channels. Now at first I was going 2 get the focusrite octopre or presonus digimax but I decided that it would be better 2 upgrade my ad/da convertor also. I was lookin at the apogee trak 2 and rosetta. I want something that will be great detail and crisp because I work a lot with live sound, strings, organ, piano, drums, etc. Which would be a good ad/da convertor + adat with @tleast 8 channels? For under 2k

For under 2 grand? An older, used Apogee Rosetta 800. But then you'll need mic pres.

Or, you could get your 002R modified at Black Lion Audio (about $800), and buy a Digimax (about $700).

Thanks. So I would need the apogee rosetta 800 plus lets say an 8 channel presnous digimax? Is the rosetta 8000 good for the money?

I think the Lynx Aurora is cheaper, but I'm not sure how much they are.

Just don't want 2 waste money. There's also the apogee trak2 which is great but only has 2 channels. The rosetta 800 has 8 channels. So would the rosetta 800 plus the presonus digimax adat be a good combo to invest in along with my digi002r?

The Rosetta 800 by itself, if you found a used older model, will probably cost about $2000. After that, you'll need pres to connect to it.

In my experience, it would be cheaper, and just as quality to get the mod and a digmax.

But to avoid confusion, the Rosetta 800 connects via ADAT, so to connect the Digimax to it, you'll need an 8-channel TRS to D-sub 25 cable. Plus, you'll need another D-sub to TRS snake for the ADAT outputs (to run to your monitors, which would now need a monitor controller to adjust the volume, mute, etc.).

Haven't heard the Lynx, but an 8-channel units runs for 2 grand at sweetwater. I seriously doubt they sound as good as the Rosetta OR a BL-modded 002R.

Feel free to do your own research, of course, but I think you'll end up taking my advice, unless you want to drop 3 grand. But know what you're buying.

Consider the BL mod:

-upgraded mic pres and line inputs (they're usable now)
-better wordclock (makes a big difference)
-you won't need a monitor controller (saves money)
-no need for 8-channel D-sub snakes (which are expensive)
-you may still use LLM
-you only have to fire up the Digimax when you need more inputs
-if 2 grand is your budget, you'll have enough left over for a decent mic, some room treatment, and another pair of headphones

Rent a 002R from a friend, or buy an Mbox Mini. You'll still save money over the external converter scenario.

I have a Rosetta 800 that I am using with Digi001, and really love the sound. I think it's a great value for the money, but as others have pointed out, it has no mic preamps. It does, however, have not only eight A/D converters, but also eight D/A converters, if that helps you any. I don't know if there are other comparable converters out there. I have a bunch of outboard mic preamps anyway, so for me it was the best choice for the money.
