That very last MMD g-4 with the new IDE controller (over 128 gig hard drive native support) won't boot into 9.2.2 native as JT said.

How do you open drive door in 9? Do you have the upper and lower eject apps for OS 9 non classic? Or was that just a Quicksilver issue?

Sometimes DP can reset the DSP on it better than digitest. Digitest came only w/ MIX or 001 PCI systems, PTs ? up to 6.4 on Mac versions.

Oh.. when you boot, hold the mouse right clicker down for entire boot up, optical drive tray will open.

Do the P,R, (option, command) P-RAM reset. Hold w four fingers: Wait for three startup chimes.

and boot into open firmware- command, option, O, F

type: reset-nvram (hit return key)
Type: set-defaults (again)
Type: reset-all then hit return key again

Machine will reboot (don't forget to reset clock and date).

Oh, after changing PCI slot order. try a new slot if persisting freezes. make sure ithe latest oms version is installed or remove 001 midi i/o from oms folder in system folder of the blessed system 9.2.2 (if no smiley face) drag the finder OS App out of the sys folder. Then drag it back in.

set colors to 256 not 1000s or millions...

freeze issue may be a spdif sample resolution frozen or stuck as well as optical frozen at Toslink. i.e. session rate may conflict w greyed out spdif settings. DP 3.0 added surround mixing but nearly same as 2.7.2 but w added surround capability. Still best to edit audio in PTs IMHO but MIDI in DP or SVP or VST those were 'the kind' MIDI sequencers.

Tiger OS installs w 001card still in a slot can mess w the 001 dsp chip.You'll notice if the spdif gets greyed out..... or you change sample res but rca spdif is still stuck at 44.1 u ll have freezing issues. Opening a 48k session.

Digitest (must be run many many times) sometimes it cannot fix this greyed out spdif mirroring or Toslink issue, reset DSP chip if optical is stuck at Toslink not ADAT.

FIX: MOTU' s audio engine w DP 2.7.2 ---> open hardware setting, set to Digidirect io and hang tough, sometimes it'll take a few restarts and pram resets (or nvram resets). But if you see a MOTU error message, i.e. a non cryptic, non Digi error message that says IN ENGLISH: DSP chip needs to be reset -- restart as per DP's instructions.

Often a workaround requires setting sample rate for session same as spdif and leave optical at ADAT, sometimes two or more restarts and pram resets. But usually the cranky ol 001 works perfectly. Watch spdif in from external... particularly Delta Cards ---> always set 001 sample rate first. Delta PCI SPDIF on another DAW can mess w spdif sample rate as well. rule 1- set 001 first and don't open sessions unless u first set the 001 sample rate. Bit depth is not a problem w 001 and greyed out spdif or optical stuck and unable to be manually changed.

we ve used vst but could never sync to simpte / mtc w opcode gear. only studio vision, dp, or Pro Tools 5.1 or 5.2.1cs 11 (free update to 32 tracks from 5.1). but only native OS 9.2.2 as JT said. no hardware support in classic mode. So you know, a tiger install w 001 pci in slot can muck up its DSP chip, but not ruin the 001.

At least w 5-6.4 it'll come with Digitest (Mac) which is same app Mix Systems came with. It can reset DSP chip and fix errors, but often it requres patience. For example if it gets 'stuck running' hold down power key and force a restart. Keep running it until no errors appear. Mine was purchased new and installing Tiger for a friend did it for me, greyed out spdif mirroring and sample rate, no adat optical either. Best to remove PCI card to be safe... before installing Tiger. Panther installs were famous for breaking dimm chips, but naturally those last mirrored doors were the best of then all (so good, that last model had a firmware block from booting into 9)... arrg!

Always 9.2.2 clean install and say no to install classic mode. But, only in the beginning of OX-X did you need separate drives for each OS. Jaguar and after you don t need two OS drives or partitions, just boot holding down OPTION key, choose whatever blessed system you have (I have 4) spread out on a pair of drives (5 drives inside all told with a Sonnet Tempo ATA-133 card (supports four drives with ide cable select (but only will fit 3 in addition to pair of IDE drives running of onboard controller (must be less that 128 gig in size). ATA Tempo card I think up to 2 TBs. Sometimes an LVD card as well.

But in 9.2.2 turn off the init in extension set for classic support. Run a lean/mean 9.2.2 Vanilla extension set. If you search here for Pro Tools 5 extension set (only 5.0.1 was both mac and pc) you will find examples: you do need Open Transport, all OMS, if freeMIDI, that, USB MOTU and freeMIDI powerplug... and the Digi inits... and SOM objects.

You'll need to download, Digi's 7.4 DCAM driver (Digi Core Audio/MIDI) to enable 001 in Tiger which is much faster than Panther, unlike Leopard, which is a CPU hog on PPCs.... so naturally 6.5 for Tiger was 86'd for the 001.

7.4 with firewire Digi or M-Powered can run Pro Tools vs 7.4 on Tiger.

We could never hear much converter improvement in 48k between rear balanced T/R/S 001 vs the 4k$ Lexi core card going in rear with a good mic pre. Dual PCM 71s awesome but Lexi Core card w/ dual PCM 71s -- verbs and fx cannot be accessed in Vision DSP or SVP 4.2 or 4.5. Cubase VST only. So another catch-22, Great Lexi Card wouldn't work in a G-4, and Opcode went out of business before they could update their VST instrument (for the PCM FXs).

If MOTU usb MIDI...

reinstall freeMIDI again after OMS. say yes to use OMS during freeMIDI install. works perfectly but SOM objects from IBM's init should be the earlier version a not b if MOTU freeMIDI w OMS. do not turn that init off.

You are eligible for PTs 6.4 for 35$ and 001 works well w rewire on Panther... you can rewire Cubase as slave...

Another word of warning: Don't transfer 9.2.2 files such as .mid or .smf w/ a fat 16 thumb cruzer 'cause it damages resource forks... use a fat 32 cruzer. sorry bout typos... (back on real keyboard and back in town).

...even on the Quicksilver the "Tiger Retail Disk' goes to a kernel error booting with 'C' key down. If you can install on a PPC laptop and clone to a PATA (IDE) drive via Oxford chipset with SuperDuper (free version) drop that drive into the Tower. But, if it is not the very last version of the mirrored door, weird errors will occur if any drive running off the onboard IDE controller is larger than 128 gigs.

OWC makes a SATA enclosure with an IDE adapter board for either drive. Or Newertechnology makes 'a swiss army knife' with both IDE 2.3/3/5 and SATA port with USB-2 you can use to clone with SuperDuper (USB won't boot a PPC) so install the IDE drive inside the MMD. Have the two drives set to cable select. If only one drive. Set the bridge pins to master (boot holding 'Option' key down... if you are using LVD SCSI for audio (best option for 9 or Panther) first check with Adaptec re Tiger if you plan to boot into Tiger, you may have to remove the Adaptec SCSI card) first. Seagate still makes 10K rpm SCSI Cheetahs.

Reaper 4 runs in Tiger on a PPC with the DCAM 001 driver (supports AU, VST) etc.

Diskwarrior from Alsoft 4.2 supports Tiger 'C' key boot (email them and ask for the CD, not the DVD version) as well as 9.2.2.

Don't use a MacIntel to clone an OS for a PPC because it will require a GUID partitioning. You want Apple Partition, HFS+ (non-case sensitive- journaling on)... but you can try target disk mode (if you have IDE onboard drives, not SCSI) turn off laptop, firewire 400, or 800-400 adapter cable, boot laptop cold holding 'T' key down. Laptop drive should appear on the G-4 desktop. DW 4.2 can be run then much faster than off the optical disk. That's about all I know. So G-3s, G-4s, have a board mounted reset switch near the battery, but be gentle just push it lightly w/ an eraser. Or follow instructions online.

Picked the ol' noggin clean. Hope all these posts keep those wonderful old 001's still running and making 'hit albums' like Radiohead.
