Black Video Window No Letterbox

Hello, I've seen this before but it's been ages. Director is out of town. Anyone know the work around? The video is Apple Pro Res but there's no black bars on source. I think the AVE is incapable of including them in the video window if they are not in the source?

What is the resolution of the quicktime? Movie properties?

Can you still work with what you have to do audio? You don’t necessarily need letterbox to do the work you need to do in Pro Tools. Do you?

Apple ProRes 422 Proxy, Linear PCM, Timecode
1280 × 540

It's black screen in PT so I can't see it. I've composed a lot of music for film over the years. 95% of the time it's 16x9 anamorphic with letterbox embedded. I've converted it to DXnHD with MPEG Streamclip but it stretches it and looks like s#@t which effects decisions IMO

Looks to be a scaled down anamorphic or CinemaScope 2.35:1 for cinematic widescreen projection.

If they were to scale it to 16x9 the image would be distorted. Or if they provided you with black bars it would be cutting off part of the image.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about here.

lol! you are not reading everything. It's BLACK, no picture, not playing in Pro Tools. AVE has always been a pain but I've had minimal issues over the past few years. I'm trying to find the workaround the director can't get me a new export as soon as I need it

I here ya. It's going to have to be someone that's seen the issue. Work reels usually are sent 16x9 letterbox. I did a tailer for massive VFX artist years ago and I had this issue.

I dont think protools is capable of creating the letter box itself to display it. I've tried multiple conversations but they look terrible in PT

I’ve seen the issue numerous times. I work with picture in PT every day.
Could be any number of things.

Corrupt file or encoding error?

Are you using hardware for video in PT? Black magic? Aja?

What’s the FR and what are you trying to view it on? TV? Computer Monitor?

Can you load a different video in the session and have it play fine?

If the video is playing fine in quicktime then try changing the some of these if you haven’t already.

Or use MPEG Streamclip to convert the video if you didn’t try that already



I have a 1280x540 video and it’s displaying fine in PT video window.
