Default What stem do you print "room tone" to?

I'm curious - what stem do you print "room tone" to? Dialog or FX?

I'd put it to FX.. or more specifically a BG stem, if you're going to be delivering an M&E.

Room tones are backgrounds.

Door closes are hard FX.

Dialog Fill, cut from the production recordings would go to dialog.

I'd put it in dial stem. It's usually there to fix problems in dialog, and sometimes there can be more room tone than you'd prefer.
On the receiving end, the guy who is doing the French dubbing may not necessarily need all that tone, he might have to come up with his own tone to match his dubbed ADR.

And when for any reason someone needs to use the dial stem, they would have a nice and smooth track other than something with broken fill.

Then there's the room tone you use for creative purposes, in that case...

Room tone to Background.
I don't agree about putting it to dialog stem as to my perception, a good dialog editing can (and should) stand alone without any backgrounds, room tones and effects.
However I don't count a production sound called "room tone" and taken for specific scene, angle, time as the BG.
In this case I may use it as PFX (production effects) only and if needed to help dialog editing. It will feed my dialog stem then too.

I often use room tones to "fill the space", which is more of a creative purpose than to just fill holes. I've already filled the holes during editing and premixing! When delivery specs allow separate stems for sound effects and ambience I prefer to put room tones to the ambience stem. When a single sound effects stem is delivered, which must include ambience, I MAY put room tones on the dialog stem. I do what I think is best for foreign language dubbing.

I put room tone used to polish and balance dialogue in the dialogues stem. I put ambience and additional room atmosphere material in the FX stem. I do this so that if the dialogue stem is removed for another language dub, the room tones used to balance dialogue are not left behind as problem areas, where the enhancements to room background stay...

I think it really depends on the context.
If it is room tone that is added specifically to cover a section of ADR then it would go in the DX stem with the ADR. If it is room tone that is added throughout an entire scene then it would go in the BG Stem.
If you were to put an entire scene of room tone in the DX stem, then the foreign dubber would have to re-create a room tone track when they take out the english DX stem (not good).

+1

Put yourself in the dubber's shoes.
