EZDrummer load question
Hi guys and gals, this is my first post here, but I've been a reader for a long time. I've gotten some great tips and techniques from reading your posts, so thank you.
My question is this: I use Toontrack's EZDrummer software, and everytime I open a session that has EZDrummer on it, it has to load (obviously), but if I close the session and then reopen it a second later, I still have to wait for EZDrummer to load again. This can take upwards of 3 minutes, which is getting a bit annoying. Is there any way to configure my Mac to keep it in memory, or to have Pro Tools not shut it down everytime a session closes? I don't think I can operate EZDrummer standalone, or I would tell my Mac to load it on startup. Any ideas? Suggestions? |

Sorry, But EZ Drummer is loading the sounds to memory and there is no quick fix other than maxing out your Ram, the more ram the faster it loads, that's just the way they designed the plug.
I have an Imac G5 with 1.5 gig of ram and it does not take but a minute to load with the biggest Kits which are DFH (Drumkit from Hell ) Claustrophobic and Twisted. There is a Stand alone version I forget what it's called but I believe it is free from toontracks, that allows you to use EZ Drummer by itself without having to use a host App.

Like Whiteyguitar said, it loads the samples into RAM, you just have to wait for it. Also, the samples take considerably longer to load if you change your session to something other than 16 bit 44.1 KHz, which is what the EZD samples are recorded at.

yeah! Just be glad you don't have to load 4 Megs of samples from floppy into stand-alone AKAI samplers for every song..or goto the tape vault and thread 24-track 2" each time....or wait for the r-r to rewind to the top of the song each time you want to playback...or do ONE bad punch on tape and lose the best recording ever...or etc....

Yeah I'm definately not complaining in the light of all that. I was just wondering if there's a better way of doing this. I guess JrummerJ is right, I'm recording at 24 bit, 48Khz and that's why its taking longer. But to respond to Whiteyguitar, I have 4.5 Gigs of RAM in my G5 and it still takes about 3 minutes to load EZDrummer every time. Any ideas why? Is it the difference in our fronside busses, or CPU speed? Thanks guys. |

I'm really not sure, I run my Sessions at 24 Bit, 44.1k so that could be what it is, I'll try a Session at 48 and 96 to see if there is a difference.
I think the longest I've had to wait is probably no more than a minute for EZD to load. The only other thing I can think of is, do you have your EZD samples on an external drive or internal? I have mine loaded on the internal.

My EZDrummer samples are on my internal system drive, which is of course seperate from my internal recording drive. I've thought about switching them over to an external harddrive but haven't done so yet. Thanks for the quick replies.
