Default If I wanted to bail on Pro Tools...

I've enjoyed Pro Tools for a long time, many years in fact. But with minimal requirements, like only needing two channels of recording, I'm considering bailing on LE and the MBox, at least on the Powerbook. There are SO many choices now for USB and Firewire interfaces, I'm confused. I realize it will mean new software, perhaps Deck or even Peak.

I'd love to hear comments, or assuming it's been discussed here to death, a link or two to other discussions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

VG

?????

You already have an M-box? If so, why would you fork out for something else that was less capable?? It appears that the M-box exceeds your requirements. If a powerbook is too expensive to maintain, get a Mac Mini. I don't understand why you would make a change.

You could still use your M Box with other software. Have a look at Traction by Mackie.

Ableton Live

Compose, record, strectch, loop, rewire, effect, perform, automate, make coffee, etc.
Keep ProTools for fnal mixdowns and ghetto mastering jobs.
Works great for me...

The problem with using Mbox with another program is you're stuck with the clunky, inefficient Digidesign Core Audio Manager.

There are a ton of options, I'd suggest a simple MOTU interface combined with either their free Audiodesk software (essentially Digital Performer without the midi capabilities) or Steinberg's Cubase or Nuendo (although both of those have many features you wouldn't use doing just VO). I haven't tried Mackie's Traction (sp?) but you can download a demo from their site and it's supposed to be simple and straightforward, maybe just what you are looking for. BTW, VO guy, are you Mike Shepard?

I'd go for the Presonus Firebox. I've seen it for $400 including free shipping and an Apex 435 mic. No point trying to use USB on Mac if you're not forced to, since it just doesn't work very well.

Yes, I've used the Firebox, and in my brief testing, it worked nicely.

You can't make coffe with the Mbox. It doesn't have the serial port for the DigiCafe. You need the Digi001 with its accessory port to use this function.

You can too, you have to turn it up on end and funnel the beans into the headphone port. Plug in the MBox into any USB port and wait for the lights to settle; pour water over the faceplate, and whallah, coffee comes out the I/O. Be careful though! The mic ports output is decaff

Didn't say anything about an Mbox.
