Default "Newest" Desktop for DIGI 001, Pro Tools Support?

How's it going DUC? I read alot but I finally have a question with an answer I can't find.

Long story short, I've been coming across a few DIGI 001's.

What is the newest PC/MAC desktop I can throw the PCI card in and install.

I'm leaning towards a PC, but if I can find a MAC that's easy to get right I will run with that.

Thanks in advance.

What is the fastest processor MB I could use?

Get the best machine that you can get. The problem is not the machine. The problem is that you an only run up to a certain version of pro tools with the digi 001 because it is no longer supported. Use the 001 with pro tools 7 or just use the 001 with a different DAW as most support it.....

With Mac, you would be stuck with an older one as they dropped the PCI slot(major reason for the 001 to get dropped). Probably a G4? There's no problem with the processor speed(the more, the better). In this case, I would expect better performance(for the 001) with say, a 3GHz dual core over a 2.66GHz quad core(you can't use the extra cores, so all you want is speed). On a PC, you might have to set BIOS to only use a single processor(assuming you buy a dual/quad core cpu), but I would try it before disabling some cores. I bet there are several new builds in use, that would work with the old 001 setup, but you need to stay on Windows XP and Pro Tools 6.4 with cs6 AND cs9(this will allow you to run XP with service pack 2 or 3). Don't install IE8 as it is a known Pro Tools killer. Look at the i7 thread and see what mobo's are being used, and check to see if any have a PCI slot.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look in to the Mac thing, but if it performs well I might do that for style/stability issues.

I found the compatibility chart and it's helped a lot.

Keep coming with the feedback, I appreciate it.

Albee, http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27127?viewlocale=en_US

So I might be stuck with the G4 like you had stated.

I've been wrong......but I never lie. As long as your investment is cheap enough, I see no problem with using older technology. Its just that you miss out on several really good things that exist in later versions of Pro Tools(like Elastic Audio, Elastic Pitch, DB-33, MiniGrand and playlists, to name a few......)

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish I could find a desktop to support the 001 and PT9.

I have a 001 on a modern Intel dual core desktop and it runs like a dream.

Keep in mind the 001 is single core so run the fastest Intel dual core you can find. Stick with XP and a Intel chipset and you should be fine.

Make sure to run the PT6.4 cs9 and cs6 plug inupdates along with the latest PACE drivers. Any modern PC will run rings around a G4

Any interface but the 001 and original MBox or those lacking a solid ASIO driver.

The beauty of 6.4 and the 001 on XP is that its rock solid and since its legacy hardware and software its reached "Appliance" status. Power it up and it just works. I like my 001 rig for what its used for-rough tracking band practices the rehearsal room. Considering PT will work with just about anything you have LOT's of better choices than a 001
