Default 12.8.2 sluggish?

Hi,

I recently took the plunge and went to 12.8.2 from 11.3.2 after staying on the side-lines for a couple of years and was a bit irritated by how sluggish navigating a session has become since 11.3.2. Scrolling up/down and also resizing tracks with ctrl-up/down seems very slow. After every key stroke there seem to be a little moment of meditation. Also moving clips around seems "magnetic". 11.3.2 felt so much more snappy.

Is this normal and I have to get used to it under PT12 generally? Or is this a problem in 12.8.2? Can't really tell is 12.8.2 is the first incarnation of PT12 I have on my system.

Thanks

Frank.

P.S.: On the positive side I haven't had a single video engine error since I upgraded. Black wink bug is still there but I (almost) got used to it.

Some users are having a GUI lag with 12.8.2. Avid is aware.

Try 12.8.1

Yep Frank, it’s PT 12, welcome to 12 :)
I spent long hours on the phone with Avid support and had to go back to Yosemite to have a somewhat stable (but still not snappy) performance.

Ciao!

12.8.2 on 12.6 is working great here, but no so great in our other rooms with trashcan macs. I heard lot of complaints about graphics performance. Must be some sort of software-hardware combination that is causing issues. 12.8.1 is better for some, but clip gain redraw is pretty bad in 12.8.1 Hopefully 12.8.3 is round the corner and fixing some of the graphic issues.

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to seeing some improvements there. For me it's mainly scroll-speed and track resize. It's like I go ctrl-up up up and then I wait for PT to do the 3 size increases. Me: click-click-click PT: click-------click------click. On 11.3.2 that kind of stuff is (was) instantaneous. Feels odd when you have to do that a thousand times per day.

Frank.

No complaints on 12.8.1 and macOS 10.12.6 on a trashcan. 12.8.2 was slow.

Same here. Lots of lag when scrolling and resizing tracks.

I'm running a 2015 MBP 15" 2.9Ghz with Sierra and the GUI lag is unbearable with 12.8.2. Also have a maxed out MacPro 2013 with 10.10.5 (Yosemite) with HDX which always runs amazing until 12.8.2. In both cases I simply went back and installed 12.8.1 and both systems are running amazing again. I tried to do a lot of troubleshooting but it was simply 12.8.2 being the problem. Even when running just a couple tracks, same thing, the GUI is super laggy. Make a good machine feels like it's 10 years older :)

The only thing I'm worried about is them repeating the problem with the next Pro Tools update.

Ok so 12.8.3 brought navigating speed back to where it was under 11. So far so good.

However, things like simple copy/paste, grouping/ungrouping clips, or shifting reels (option-H) seem WAY slower than they used to be under 11.

Example in a super-session with 200 tracks:

Shifting a 15-minute reel down the timeline before Conformalizing takes around 10-12 seconds before the command is completed and PT becomes responsive again.

Selecting a one second segment across all tracks and the hitting C or command-C can take up to 3-5 seconds before PT becomes responsive again.

Pasting the same segment sometimes even longer than that.

Grouping and ungropuping clips takes about 2 seconds.

Doing a "cut all automation" over a 2 frame segment across all tracks takes about 2-3 seconds.

These operations in an equivalent session were faster under 11 by factor 2-3 I'd say (non-scientific figure) on the same machine.

I know that people that have been on 12 forever always look at me as if I was talking Chinese when I mention this but when you jump from 11.3.2 to 12.8 the difference feels *huge* with regards to the above.

I hope this can be improved in the future.

Thanks

Frank.
