Custom pc build
hi guys
my hd native system is on the way! cant wait. i have bein using a dell xps420 for 3 years now running pt 7 to 10 with no major problems at all..i think its time to get a new pc so can someone please send me in the right direction to get someone to build a killer pro tools pc. is it better to get the parts myself and get somone to put together,or get it made? would a dell precision T7600 work well with pt hd native? |

Re: Custom pc build
My 2 cents only, but I would hit the section for Pro Tools LE on Windows, sticky threads, and check the one called "i7 Builds"(first page is a treasure trove of help and info). Right now(as in early 2013) the ONLY rig I would build would be a socket 2011 i7 cpu, X79 motherboard(Asus or Gigabyte) and 16(or 32)GB of quad-channel RAM. i know some folks are reporting success with socket 1155, but mine was a failure(and I'm not without experience as I am on my 7th custom PC build). Also, look thru the posts in this section and see who has their parts listed in their signature. Matching a successful build is not a bad way to go. My 3rd cent, if I could NOT afford the socket 2011 setup, I would actually go to eBay and buy another socket 1366 rig(have seen motherboard/RAM/CPU kits for well under $500).

Re: Custom pc build
hmm,
Well, as I am planning a socket 1155 build, I must say, I am interested in more info on your 'failure', if not too much trouble. Socket 1155 is pretty dominant on the i7 realm. The LE thread does not appear too active currently - understandable. Is there not a ProTools Native custom build thread I missed ? Surprising. Anyway, I am looking at a GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard foundation. Any enlightenment appreciated. |

Re: Custom pc build
Always something !
The LGA 2011 socket is used in the high end Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors while the LGA 1155 is used in the mainstream Sandy Bridge ( as well as the forthcoming Ivy Bridge) processors. The LGA 1155 has been in existence for a while. The LGA 2011 is a recent release, to support the Sandy Bridge E-Series Processors. Background and need of the LGA 2011 The Sandy Bridge E-Series Processors have quad channel memory controller as opposed to dual channel in regular Sandy Bridge. The quad channels increases the memory transfer rate. However, they also require many more pins to support the additional 2 memory channels. The Sandy Bridge E-processors also add PCIe 3.0 support, and increases the number of PCIe lanes from 16 to 40 lanes. Obviously all this require more number of pins in the socket. The Block diagram shows a Sandy Bridge E-Processor. Gee, that does sound useful. Anone have this ? |

Re: Custom pc build
that quad channel memory control really sounds exciting.
Intel DX79S1, for example, supports 8 DIMMS, for a total of 64GB. Now, is PT11 can use all that, well, gee. I haven't been this excited about PT in a while. |

As for a case, Antec P280 is a great choice(surprisingly quiet). Reply to Culhane; one major reason 1155 is so popular is....the price(my i5 was $159 on sale). With a Pro Tools machine, power/compatibility is job one, not price
