Default macOS 10.14 Mojave and “cheese grater” Mac Pros

I've read conflicting reports on the compatibility of the “cheese grater” Mac Pro (2010/2012) and Apple's upcoming macOS 10.14 Mojave.

Apparently, if these older Mac Pro models have a metal compatible GPU, then they can be upgraded to Mojave.

Since newly designed Mac Pros will reportedly not be available until at least 2019, I'd like to be able to continue using my cheese grater for the time being. I just can't find any definitive information on what metal compatible GPUs are available for the older desktop Mac Pros.

If anyone can shine some light about the possibilities or has experience with cheese grater graphics cards, it would be greatly appreciated.

The top question is: is there any logical reason you're even thinking about an as yet-to be-released OSX version especially when Avid can't get PT to work right with the latest HS?

Second question: what is a 'metal compatible GPU'?

I would like to be informed and know what my options are for the future CPU-wise.

From what I've read from WWDC 2018 reports, the GPU is what will determine whether or not a cheese grater Mac Pro is compatible with the new OS.

The best (i.e cheapest) option for the 2010/2012 Mac Pros is AMD 7950 or 7970. I'll get one fo those for mine.

Why the need?
Some of us are system builders and need to be detailed in our options as our clients move forward and old resources dry up.

True. A solid system can (and should) be maintained.

Also, if you want a boot screen then you either want the "Apple card" (which is the 7950 - ridiculously pricey unless you find a good deal on ebay or something) or a flashed "PC" card. Otherwise you won't see a picture until the login screen/desktop appears. It's possible (and not that difficult) to flash the card ourselves but you need Windows to do it. So in terms of price, the cheapest solution is to get an unflashed card ($100+) and do the EFI mod yourself, if possible.

Having said that, these 2 models are getting more and more affordable these days.

Sounds like Mojave is going to bring some great performance gains, looking forward to it! And....dark mode of course

Thank you!
I'm reading up on the cards you mentioned. What would you consider to be a "decent" price for a flashed card or something that will work right out of the box?

It will be interesting to see which DAW developer embraces the "dark mode" first!
