Install the driver for the Akai. Open Pro Tools and go to Setup>Midi>Midi Studio. Create a new "Instrument". Name it whatever you like. Skip the brand and model(it won't matter). Select the Input Port(this is the "crucial" setting). It will likely appear as something like "Akai MPK USB[Emulated]"(but it should be an obvious selection). Close and reopen the session, create a stereo instrument track. Insert your VI plugin of choice. Enable record on the track and tap the akai(and cross your fingers)

I can't get the Akai MPK Mini 2 to work with ProTools either. I have Pro Toos 12.6 on 10.11.1 MacOS (El Capitan) i7 cpu with 16 GB RAM.

It recognizes the device in Audio Midi Setup and when I test the device in the Midi Studio there I can hear the test tone when I hit any button on the MPK. That leads me to believe the issue in Pro Tools.

I've went into Peripherals and added the MPK there in the midi controllers.
I've also enabled it as the MIDI Machine Control master. At this point I'm thinking of returning this device.

I was able to resolve this by turning on 'MIDI Thru' in the Options menu.
